The early bird really does get the worm

College kids are often lumped under the assumption that we all stay up super late and sleep in until the afternoon. Yet for me, this is hardly the case. I love waking up early and getting a good start to my day. I have found that being a morning person makes me feel better about my assignments and work, while encouraging me to have a more positive attitude. Now to be a morning person does not mean you have to be up at the crack of dawn, but it does entail being proactive about when you set your alarm and when you get out of bed. Here are my reasons why I love being a morning person.

First off, it is so much easier to be productive in the morning. I have found throughout my time in school and working that I prefer to begin my day early. I feel so much better when I give myself ample time to work on my assignments and tasks by waking up early and just starting my day earlier as a whole. It is much less stressful to complete your homework and studying when you allow yourself extra time to complete these tasks. It is also scientifically proven that being a morning person makes one more proactive and less prone to procrastination. This is due to the extra time that you give yourself by waking up earlier, which I find super important! Another bonus of starting your day and tasks early is that you will be able to finish your work earlier too. It is very nice and rewarding to be able to finish your homework at a reasonable hour and still have time in your day to hang out with friends or give yourself time to relax. By being a morning person and creating more time within your day, you are not only creating more time to complete homework but you are also giving yourself more time to do the things you enjoy.

Being a morning person is also great because it is so relaxing to be the only one awake or out and about. I am typically the first one awake out of all my roommates. I find this small detail important because you don’t have to fully socialize or necessarily interact with anyone until you are ready. You get to be up early, but you also get to decide when you have to be fully awake mentally and engaged in conversations. I also find it very rewarding to go outside in the morning, whether this means on a casual walk, sitting by the terrace, or being on your way to class. When you are awake earlier than most people in your area, you get to have a peaceful surrounding outside. The atmosphere is still quiet and you get to enjoy the sounds of your surroundings, such as the birds chirping, trees bristling in the wind or the waves of the lake amongst the shore. I think that being one of the few people outside in the mornings is one of my favorite parts of being an early riser, as it adds a relaxing element to my day and makes me appreciative of my surroundings.

Being an early riser also helps you have a better mindset about things. I have found that whenever I feel sad or upset it is often at night. I rarely feel excessively anxious or stressed during the mornings because I know that it is a new day and that I have my whole day ahead of me to get assignments and tasks finished. It is much easier to be positive about my day because it is a fresh start and I get to experience all of the small things that make me excited for my day to begin, such as the peaceful outside environment that I previously mentioned. Being a morning person has made me feel so much more productive and organized with my schoolwork and life as a whole. So, if you have any desire to try to wake up early or change your routine, I highly recommend trying to become a morning person as it will give you more time and a better attitude.
