Top Ten Things To Do During Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

  1. Go caroling – If you’re like me, you’re incredibly tone deaf and should never sing out loud…ever. But it’s the holiday season, so why not grace your neighbors with sad attempts at singing Jingle Bells. They’ll give you an A for effort!
  2. Play in the snow – If this winter is anything like last winter, the amount of snow we’ll actually receive is very minimal and it is super important to enjoy it while it lasts. Strap on your snow pants, shove on your boots, bundle up, and go play like your 7 years old again!
  3. Read a completely un-educational book – Whether your definition of un-educational includes authors like Jodi Picoult (me, that’s me, love that woman more than life) and James Patterson or authors like George Orwell and Toni Morrison, read something! Rarely do we get to read a book without having to analyze the author’s diction, so take advantage of it and immerse yourself in a completely different world. MUST READ: James Patterson’s Now You See Her
  4. Have yourself a movie marathon – Watch movies on movies on movies and have absolutely no guilt whatsoever. My favorite movie of all time that you MUST SEE: We Bought a Zoo
  5. Look for summer internships – I know the last thing you’ll probably want to do is think about interning somewhere, but the best time to look is now. There are people out there who are already 4 steps ahead of you. Catch up while you can. I recently found a bunch on BarefootStudent.com – I have literally no idea if it is reputable or at all helpful compared to other websites, but I found about 10 that I plan on applying to!
  6. Volunteer somewhere – Whether it is a soup kitchen or a hospital, volunteer! It’s one of most humbling experiences you’ll ever have. I promise it’s worth it. Plus, IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON!
  7. Hit up the gym – We all know every person on earth will be attempting to hold onto a New Year’s resolution that includes them working out every day, so beat the rush. Start going BEFORE New Year’s. That way you don’t feel like such an asshole come January 1st.
  8. Do one random act of kindness – Pay for the person behind you at Starbucks, shovel someone’s driveway, make someone cookies! Do something you’ve never done for someone before and do it out of the kindness of your heart.
  9. Go ice skating – Find some conspicuous tiny pond, make sure it’s solid (wouldn’t want to make a trip to the ER or anything), and skate! Embrace your inner figure skater or hockey player and struggle your way through some quality ice skating.
  10. Do nothing – UW is giving you one month out of the school year to actually do nothing. So take advantage of it and sit on your ass. Watch countless hours of Breaking Bad. Sleep until noon. Be lazy. Do nothing.
I'm a sophomore at the oh-so-lovely University of Wisconsin-Madison, which obviously means I'm a die-hard Badger fan. I will be studying Strategic Communications through the UW Journalism School and hope to work for an advertising agency in a few short years. I live and breathe Chicago sports - Bulls above everything - and have an insane obsession with animals. My favorite song in the whole wide world is without a doubt "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" by Eli Young Band. "Some dreams keep on gettin' better, gotta keep believin' if you wanna know for sure."
