The September Issue Vogue: Sparknotes Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Last week, I felt extremely overwhelmed by the 200 pages of assigned reading my syllabus seemed to taunt me with. That was just for one class. As I began to tackle the seemingly endless homework in the library in angst-y college-student like form I remembered that I just breezed through 902 pages of Vogue with ease and amusement just weeks before classes started. Priorities, people. Priorities.

As a self-proclaimed magazine junkie, it truly is wonderful to blame my habit of buying 30 dollars worth of glossy pages once a month for “research” purposes. After declaring my journalism major, this enjoyable past time finally became relevant to my real life! For those of you who do not share in my affinity to read magazines cover-to-cover, I now give you the Vogue September Issue: Sparknotes Edition!

The September issue of Vogue sets the fashion standard for the rest of the year until the following September issue takes its place once again. I have narrowed the hefty issue down to just 7 main trends I saw throughout the magazine. While I do recommend fashion fanatics to buy the magazine for inspiration purposes, I recognize that not everyone is willing to set aside schoolwork for magazines. But it is totally okay for me to do that now…because I’m a journalism student… right? Below you will find the main trends I picked up on, and how to make them wearable in a college town like Madison.

  1. One-Piece Wonders – On many pages I noticed that one-piece outfits are totally a “do” for fall. But how does one rock a trendy jumpsuit without turning heads for all the wrong reasons? Throw a tailored blazer on top and work that high fashion look for a job or internship interview! This will update the pantsuit look, and the one-piece under a blazer with a statement necklace will give you a more youthful vibe.
  2. Red is the newred – Yes ladies, it’s still all about the red. The fiery hue stands the test of time, but dramatic changes keep the trend up to date. Fall is all about the oxblood. I for one can’t wait to find the perfect oxblood leather jacket or tote for when I go abroad next semester, but I suggest an oxblood lipstick for those more daring fashionistas looking for a beauty update.
  3. Crème of the Crop – Have no fear college students, the crop top is still in style. However, the September issue of Vogue found ways to keep this summer trend weather appropriate and tasteful for fall wears. A chic, high-wasted pencil skirt coupled with a high neck crop top looks perfect with a blazer or leather jacket to add edge. Wear this look out for girls’ night with your besties.
  4. Futuristic Love – So do you think bold and interesting looks are better off in The Hunger Games? Well, this fall is all about the sleek and bold lines of the future. New to the trend and apprehensive to give it a try? Find a coat with a sharp ruffle to wear to class or a bold peplum for a more formal event to update the classic little black dress.
  5. Pow! – Bold graphics are here to stay, people! Phillip Lim’s new line for Target features comic book like illustrations and this September’s issue of vogue featured daring colors and illustrations as well. To look instantly trendy for class try a bold graphic T-shirt from State Street’s Urban Outfitters paired with skinny jeans and classic tall boots to rock this trend without going overboard.
  6. Houndstooth, tweed, and plaid, oh my! – Wool houndstooth, tweed, and plaid in the form of coats, skirts, and bags was by far the biggest trend within the 902 pages of Vogue. The largely neutral print comes in all forms, and is easy to mix into any fall wardrobe. A tweed bag with a metallic chain, a neutral houndstooth fall coat, or a black and white tweed skirt will keep you on trend and scream sophistication.
  7. Jennifer Lawrence – The September issue cover girl is a new trend, but will not be going anywhere anytime soon. She. Is. Everything. Lawrence is young, relatable, and just real. I mean, do you think anyone else could fall on her face on the way to receive her first Oscar (while Bradley Cooper shot out of his seat to rescue her no less) and still be a perfect human being? I think not.

You’re welcome, ladies. Now you can let those 902 glossy pages stay on your coffee table for a whole year and you’ll be on trend without even turning a page. Whatever trend you choose to experiment with, do it confidently and stay true to your personal style all the while. Hah, that rhymed.
