My Top Study Spots on UW Madison Campus for Finals Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

choose your spot for the ultimate study experience

Finals season always gives me the urge to plant myself in the library to finish my work and study. I look for a study spot that will keep me motivated, focused and awake. However, depending on the mood I am in and the time of day, the places I want to study drastically change. Here are a few places and what their environment is like that may guide you in the right direction when choosing your next study spot during finals.

for girls who need absolute silence to study: AMP Library or the Historical Society.

AMP Library is located at Chamberlin Hall on the fourth floor. This library offers tables of all sizes and some comfy chairs, but if you are really lucky you might be able to steal one of the spots in the middle of the book shelves. The Historical Society is located in Library Mall close to Memorial Union. It offers really long tables and offers lots of peaceful scenery while you study. Both these spots are for those who need absolute silence to concentrate. Any time I need to grind out assignments or stay focused without distractions, I make my way to one of these spots since there is an unspoken universal rule to not talk in these places.

For girls who need to talk while they do work: College Library loud section.

College Library is located directly next to Memorial Union and the lake. If you haven’t been here by now, I will be shocked. This library offers three different floors, a cafe on the first floor, private study rooms and printers. Everything you need to study can be located at the College Library. If you are looking to be loud or want to constantly talk with your friends, the library’s loud section, located when you first open the doors on each floor from the staircase, is the best place for you to do it. Although you will probably still take a few looks from others trying to quietly study in this section, most people have a mutual understanding that talking is appropriate in this section. This library is open super late and even offers SafeWalk ambassadors to walk you home when it gets late at night.

For people who need a perfect mix of both

The SAC, also known as the Student Activity Center, is located in East Campus Mall on the third and fourth floor of the university’s building. I first took advantage of the SAC this year for my studying sessions. It offers cubbies for those who want to work privately and larger tables for collaboration among classmates and friends. Most people work quietly here, but also tend to talk with the people they are with. This place is somewhere you can focus, but not be subjected to complete silence. It has plenty of large glass windows so it doesn’t feel like you are trapped there when studying. Fresh Market and Valentia Coffee are also located next door in case you need a snack break.

No matter where you are studying this finals season, just remember you are always worth more than a grade. Be proud of yourself for all of the hard work you’ve put into your academics this semester. Make sure to take care of yourself this finals season and take a break from studying once in a while. You can do this; you are almost done!
