If Different Areas of Campus Were Hogwarts Houses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

I get it — you’re overwhelmed with schoolwork, social life and lack of sleep. But worry no more, though — I’m going to answer the question that’s been in the forefront of your mind for the last couple weeks: which UW-Madison buildings belong in which houses from Harry Potter? Here’s a list of different buildings, landmarks and places on campus sorted into their rightful Hogwarts houses.

1. Gryffindor

Langdon Street: This street — known for frat houses, parties and walk of shame — is only walked by the bravest students on campus. In true Gryffindor fashion, you seriously have to be confident to go down Langdon Street. Bonus points if it’s on a weekend — or, let’s be honest, a Thursday.

Camp Randall Stadium: Since “GAME DAY” is pretty much a war cry, Camp Randall is a battlefield — a place where you’d definitely find a group of Gryffindors. Luna dressed up for the quidditch game is basically us on game day.

2. Slytherin

Humanities Building: If you’ve ever had to walk in here — whether for a class, a student org meeting or because you had to pee really bad and thought you could find a bathroom real quick — you know this building is confusing AF. Designing a building this way, where you walk in and you’re automatically on the third floor, is something only a Slytherin would pull with their cunning nature and tricky attitude.

The Natatorium: Only a Slytherin would put a workout building so far away (a 30-minute walk for people from Southeast, and it isn’t technically “close” to the Lakeshore residence halls either). Fine, whatever! But once you’re there and ready to sweat, you’ll find yourself struggling to find anything: where’s the the locker room, the fitness class or the 10-pound weights? Making you work hard to work out is a classic Slytherin move.

3. Ravenclaw

Memorial (or College, Steenbock, etc.) Library: This one’s pretty obvious. Ravenclaw is all about learning, books and knowledge. There’s really no better place on campus to get that than any library (take your pick of the 40+).

Union South: This is another all-knowing, information-giving building. You can get a bus pass, your Wiscard, a cup of ice cream, a movie screening schedule and an advising session all within an hour at Union South.

4. Hufflepuff

Bascom Hill: Bascom Hill is a Madison staple — always there, sloping upward, making you break a sweat when all you’re trying to do is to get to class. That’s what a Hufflepuff is like: a loyal friend who always seems to be around even if it’s inconvenient for you (it’s okay if you’re tired of them).

State Street: Restaurant after restaurant, clothing store after clothing store, State Street is another Hufflepuff-like place. This long street is also super loyal to your hunger, fashion and random needs. There’s always a friendly face to run into, and that in itself is pretty Hufflepuff-esque.

With this guide, you can sort yourself into a house based on where you spend the most time. UW-Madison is basically the sorting hat. See you fellow Ravenclaws in the library!

I'm a freshman from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I go to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and this is my first semester with Her Campus! I love dogs, really fancy hamburgers and New Girl (I honestly try to act like Jessica Day at all times)
