Guide to Throwing a Great Holiday Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

School is almost over guys! I can guarantee that we are all stressed because of finals, studying in packed libraries, and drinking an excessive amount of coffee, but the week will be over before we know it (trying to be optimistic here). When finals are over, there might not be that movie moment where everyone in the class throws papers in the air and breaks into song, but that doesn’t mean us badgers won’t be celebrating. Here is a guide to throwing a great holiday/post-finals/winter break party. Apply at your own risk.

1)     Pick a theme.

Whether it’s ugly Christmas sweaters or classy formal attire, a themed party is always fun to go to. It also gives you an excuse to go shopping for the perfect outfit and decorations.

2)     Dress up (or down)

You’ve literally spent a week at the library in sweat pants studying until you cry. You deserve to look in the mirror and think, “Damn, I look good.” Your confidence will go up, and your hosting skills will too.

3)     Decorate your house

Hang lights from every wall, grab a Christmas tree and top it off with an empty beer bottle, and cut out snowflakes to hang on the wall.  Just make sure all your décor isn’t in too dangerous of a territory.

4)     Play Mariah Carey’s or Justin’s Bieber’s “All I want for Christmas Is You.”

A collective group of drunk college kids singing high pitched Christmas tunes makes for a great time.

5)     Speaking of beverages…

Champagne and hot chocolate spiked with peppermint schnapps. Need I say more?

6)     Celebrate with friends.

I know this is an obvious step, but it’s an important one. You just finished finals and the holidays are meant to be spent with those you love! Start the New Year off positively with people whom you care about and who care about you. You don’t need to invite the whole block over to have a good time.

So pop out the champagne, put on the sparkly dress, and turn on some great tunes! You deserve it.
