Delta Delta Delta: Cookout for Kids

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Delta Delta Delta – Mu Chapter at University of Wisconsin, or more fondly known as Tri Delta, has had a strong presence on our campus for the past 110 years. Despite being known for their sweet, warm members and that amazing white and red house that sits on Langdon, Tri Delta has one the strongest philanthropic influences in Greek Life. Her Campus spoke with Tri Delta’s philanthropy chair, junior Sophie Dubuisson, about Tri Delta’s partnership with St. Jude Research Hospital and what being a Tri Delta means to her.

Can you tell me about the work Tri Delta does with the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital?

In 1999, Tri Delta established a formal, philanthropic partnership with St. Jude. In 2010, Tri Delta announced its fundraising goal – to raise $15 million in 5 years to name a Specialty Clinic at the hospital. Tri Delta completed the “$15 million in 5” goal in just 3 and a half years. In 2014, Tri Delta committed to raising $60 million in 10 years to name Tri Delta Place, the on-campus, short-term housing facility at St. Jude. This is the largest single commitment made by a St. Jude partner. Tri Delta was announced as St. Jude’s 2014 partner of the year. To date, Tri Delta has raised more than $30 million for St. Jude.

Delta Delta Delta – Mu Chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has three main philanthropy events to help raise money for St. Jude; Sincerely Yours, Tri Hop, and Cookout for the Kids. Sincerely yours is a fundraising program that asks each chapter member to send 50 letters to family, friends and neighbors to ask for donations to help raise money for St. Jude. Tri Hop is an annual “all-you-can-eat” pancake breakfast philanthropy event held at the Tri Delta house. Cookout for the Kids is a new event for Tri Delta this year and will be held on campus where we will sell plates of donated food for $5. In just last semester alone, our chapter was able to raise almost $50,000 for St. Jude, an accomplishment that we pride ourselves in!

So tell me more about Cookout for the Kids.

At Cookout for the Kids, we will be selling $5 plates of food donated from local restaurants and vendors such as Chipotle, P.F. Changs, Toppers, and more. We plan to have tables, an EZ-up and tailgate games at the event and hope to get a good amount of people because it’s during homecoming weekend! All of the proceeds will be donated to St. Jude’s, and the event is this Saturday October 25th from 12:30-4:00 pm at Library Mall. Our “slogan” for the event is “Save a life one plate at a time”.

That sounds awesome! Why did you decide to join Tri Delta?

I actually went through recruitment as a sophomore here at UW-Madison. I wanted to join a sorority to meet new people, make a large campus feel a little bit smaller and feel like I was a part of a community here at UW. The reason I joined Tri Delta has a lot to do with how comfortable I felt during recruitment at the house, the conversations I had with the girls, the overall vibe I got and the bonds I saw between the girls. But another main reason Tri Delta stood out to me was because of the incredible passion our chapter has for St. Jude. The effort and motivation our members put in to raise money for our philanthropy was what really stood out to me and what ultimately made me realize that Tri Delta was the place for me!

What’s the best thing about being a Tri Delt at UW?

The best thing about being a Tri Delta at UW-Madison is our sisterhood and our overall passion for giving back. St. Jude is something that each and every member cares about and wants to raise money for. We raised almost $50,000 last semester alone for St. Jude! Being a Tri Delta at UW-Madison is also great because there are so many different personalities and such a mix of people that are a part of our chapter. I feel like I’ve gotten to know so many unique and great people who are all different, but who all share something really great. Even though we may not all be “best friends” and all hang out all of the time, we all share a passion for St. Jude that makes our sisterhood so great.

So, don’t forget to check out Cookout for the Kids!

This Saturday, October 25th from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
