8 Summer Jobs That Won’t Disappoint

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

While summer break may seem like the perfect time to hit the beach, hit the booze and hit the boys, it is also a great time to rake in some extra cash.  An increasing number of college students are ditching their summers of fun for a summer dedicated to paying off some of those inevitable student loans.  If you’re searching for the perfect summer job: look no further.

1. Nanny

Regardless of gender, being a nanny, or a manny, for a local family has its upsides.  Most families pay upwards of $10/hour with no tax deductions.  It may seem like you are the kids’ personal servant, but perks include trips to the pool and a fully-stocked fridge at all times.

2. Bartender

This is arguably the most sought-after job for college kids.  Those late nights at the bar with music blasting in your ears will make it seem like you never left campus.  On average, bar tenders make around $9/hour, plus tips. Obvious perk: drinking on the job.

3. Fitness Instructor

Calling all fitness enthusiasts.  If you love going to the gym more than you love going to work, why not combine the two?  After a year of sitting in cramped lecture halls, becoming a certified fitness instructor is the perfect way to stay in shape and make money at the same time.  Perks include gym junkies who are easy on the eyes.

4. Caddy/Beer-Cart Girl

Who wouldn’t want to drive a golf cart around all day?  Not to mention the overflow of tips that come from stuck-up country-clubbers who’ve had one too many vodka/lemonades.  Being a caddy or a cart-girl is also a great way to enjoy the beautiful summer weather.

5. Lifeguard

Landing a lifeguard gig isn’t always the easiest process, but it is definitely worth the effort.  After becoming certified, your job title can be described as “professional tanner.”  Stock up on SPF and be prepared for screaming little kids 24/7, but there are worse things than hanging around the pool all summer.

6. Camp Counselor

This is a great opportunity for those who love being around kids and taking some leadership initiative.  You get to spend time and develop meaningful relationships with kids, be outdoors, participate in fun activities and develop real-life skills.

7. Pet-Sitter

Perfect for animal lovers seeking the attention of some furry friends.  This job is especially perfect for outdoorsy people, as animals like dogs love walks and hikes.  Not to mention the fact that owners may even pay as well as $15-25/hour.

8. Paid Intern

Last but not least, the infamous paid internship.  While these may seem next to impossible to obtain, they are well-worth the fight.  Many internships require an extensive application process to secure a position, but they offer valuable real-world experience in the field of your interest.  Nothing beats that.

Despite your work experience (or lack thereof), there are plenty of opportunities to make money this summer.  Buckle down and start thinking about your summer job plans.  Your bank account will thank you later.
