As a woman of color, I noticed that my bookshelf needed more books by authors from my community. Although I love reading, I don’t pick up books by African American authors as often as I think I should. That’s why this year I made a pact with myself to read at least ten books by African American authors. Through Instagram, I started to follow book bloggers in order to find some interesting books to read. Here are six book bloggers I follow that created a community for POC that love to read and are looking for books that represent their community.

1.@book_girl_magic

I love the aesthetic she uses when she takes pictures of the books. Her page is filled with book quotes, her favorite books and reviews. Also, she runs a book club on her Instagram.

2. @booksforthesoul

Bianca created this page to “educate, motivate, and inspire” people through the books she posts. She writes about how the book has impacted her and the thoughts she had as she was reading. Plus, the aesthetics of her page makes you want to read all her recommendations.

3. @booksandbrunchbookclub

This book blogger offers a variety of African American books from different genres. She doesn’t only include pictures of books, but she posts meetings with the authors. She’s from Washington D.C.!

4. @absorbedinpages

Jaime’s page is filled with book reviews and books she is currently reading. I love that she interacts a lot with her followers by posting prompts about each book she reads.

5. @forcoloredgirlsbookclub

As the Instagram handle says, this page is filled with books written by and for  African Americans. She fills her page with books that many African American females may want to include in their library.

6. @wellreadblackgirl

Glory Edim created this page for people to have books by black women on their bookshelf. She doesn’t only post about books, but she posts pictures about phenomenal black women that have created a change in society.

Although these book bloggers’ Instagram profiles cater to the African American community and women, these books are for everyone to check out. As for me, I already have a few books I plan to read from these Instagram accounts.

Cynthia Ubah grew up in Maryland. She is attending University of Wisconsin-Madison pursuing International Studies with a certificate in Global Health and East Asian Studies. She hopes to work and live in South Korea for a few years. If you are looking for someone to watch Korean drama with or listen to Kpop, she is your girl. Her interests are God, cooking, hangout with friends, reading books, learning Korean, and fashion. Check out her blog at https://mylifeinthemoments.wixsite.com/mysite .
