Loving Yourself: Valentine’s Day Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

As Valentine’s Day is approaching, many people are feeling the effects of not having a partner to share this day with. Everywhere you go, you see pictures, tweets, or videos about having someone to share Valentine’s Day with. Sometimes you just want to crawl into bed and not come out until this season is over with:

But it doesn’t have to be like that! While having someone to share Valentine’s Day with is ultimately the goal, you don’t need one! Valentine’s Day is the day of love: The love you have for yourself and what’s around you. Here are some great activities that you can do on Valentines Day (or Galentine’s):

  1. Make a Playlist

Playlists just make everything better! It sets the mood and tone for the day. To hype you up for a night of fun or calm you for a night in. Whichever way you go, a playlist is the soundtrack of your day! Some artists for a perfect Valentine’s Day are Victoria Monet, Beyonce, and Megan thee Stallion.

2. Invite your friends over

You don’t need to be in a relationship on Valentine’s Day to showcase love. Invite your girls over and have a good time! Have matching pajamas, have a good dinner, and celebrate the day of love! There are so many ideas on the internet of things you can do with your best girls! Make it a night to always remember. Share stories, have a drink, sing all night long, and do cute crafts (everyone loves to craft)!

3. Go shopping!

Shopping makes everyone happy. Go out and buy a cute outfit or decorations to add in your living area. It’s okay to spoil yourself because you deserve it. Go buy yourself something you have been wanting, but putting off, because you deserve it! It’s okay to splurge on yourself every now and again.

4. Take yourself on a date

There are so many things out here you can do on Valentines Day where you don’t need a partner. Take yourself out to dinner wearing that amazing dress you just bought, have a cooking and baking night, or a self-care day! Go get your nails and hair done. You deserve to feel and look good on this day.

5. Be kind to yourself!

Don’t let expectations you see online determine where you should be in life. If you aren’t in a relationship as Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s okay. Buy yourself flowers, hang out with friends, give yourself grace, say affirmations. It’s a day of love, love yourself!

Be easy on yourself. Don’t let other people lives set the expectation for how you should be living. Don’t let what you are seeing on the internet tell you that being alone for a day is wrong. While it’s completely normal to get lonely at times, there is nothing wrong with being with yourself. Treat yourself to a day of fun and enjoy yourself. Valentines Day is the day of love: Loving yourself! Romanticize your life, it’s the best way to live. Self-love is the best love. You are always enough!
