The time has come, America!

It’s time to pass the torch from a man with one of the higher approval ratings upon exiting office, to a man entering office with historically low approval ratings–but hey, that’s all fake news anyway, right? After all, our next president has been promising to “make America great again”.

We all know that America was greater than it is now at any other point in history. You know, like when segregation was a thing? When gay marriage was illegal? Slavery? America was pretty darn great until it became more progressive and put a very intelligent, educated, and qualified African American man into office.

We do not really know what is to come of a Trump presidency, but there is a widespread mutual feeling that it will not be good for our nation and for other nations.

January 20, 2017 is the day a racist, bigot, xenophobic, Islamophobic, misogynistic, unqualified, non taxpaying lying TV star is sworn into the presidency. A man who has boasted about sexually assaulting women will be inaugurated. A man who does not believe in climate change, and who does not see environmental protection as a top priority. A man who mocked a disabled reporter. A man who testified that the election would be rigged until he won. A man who has cheated on his wives and had multiple affairs with other women and bragged about it.  A man who will be taking an oath he will not keep to uphold a Constitution he does not understand while placing his hand on a book he has not read.

As a millennial woman, I could not be more terrified by this.

Since he became the president-elect in November, he’s done so much to comfort not only our country, but other countries through things like choosing cynicism over trust, chaos over community, and Twitter tantrums over news interviews. He has appointed people in his cabinet to positions they do not really care about or are unqualified for.

He claims he will destroy ISIS, yet he turns to his Twitter account to cry about Meryl Streep saying mean things about him. He cries out “fake news” any time someone says something bad about him, and he wants to do away with everything that helps American remain at peace with other nations. He literally makes up facts that his followers blindly believe. He flip flops on all of his policies. He said that if his own daughter were not his daughter, he would be dating her.

This is the man who will lead our country.

Just remember that this is America, where we celebrated a man who fought racism on Monday and we are inaugurating a racist the Friday of the same week. We are inaugurating a man who thinks he can run America like a business, yet he has had six bankruptcies. He said that only weak veterans have PTSD. In the same speech he gave announcing his presidential bid, he called Mexican immigrants rapists. He responded to the shooting at the Orlando night club which took 49 lives with “Appreciate the congrats for being right on Islamic terrorism” on his Twitter.

I wish I could offer you some words of comfort as we head into these next four years, but I am just as terrified as the rest of you.
