There is a language out there that everyone knows. This little nifty language is a huge, screaming sign from guys telling you what they really mean. Of course, girls have their own secret little words that they are broadcasting, but for now, let’s just focus on the words guys are saying.

Just like everyone else, guys reveal a lot about themselves through their actions. Those quiet movements and gestures are all secret words that make up an entire language… body language. When you think about it, guys aren’t always so hard to decipher. They already claim to be easier to understand than girls (this often is true), but girls just don’t always understand it. So here are some hints that will help you learn how to decipher guys.

Proximity. If a guy likes you, he’s going to want to get as close to you as possible without seeming like a creep. (Tip: If you’re not interested, moving away from him or avoiding eye contact is good way to use body language as a sign that you are not into him).

Touching. Very similar to proximity, but if a guy is confident enough (though he doesn’t always seem it), he’ll find any excuse he can to touch you, whether it’s a hand on your back or a quick hug. Be careful, though. Don’t mistake closeness and touching with someone that you’ve known for a while to be an automatic, “OMG! He likes me,” body language.

The Flare. While many girls like a flare of extravagance or drama, guys have a little flare of their own. When a guy is attracted to you, he flares his nostrils. Most guys don’t even realize that they do it. This is a clear symbol that he definitely thinks you’re pretty.

The Chest. Wherever his chest or body are facing is usually the most important thing in the room. If you two are talking and someone comes to interrupt, he may turn his face away, but if his chest and upper body stay facing you, he is multitasking. He is paying attention to the person speaking, but he’s also focusing on you. If he is focusing on you, especially in the middle of a conversation with another person, it’s a sign that he holds you in high respect.

Smiles. Smiles can be extremely telling. Tight smiles can mean irritation, pain or anger. Tight smiles can also mean shyness though. A half smile can either mean he has conflicting emotions about what you’re saying or his attraction towards you. However, a half smile can also mean that he is attracted, but he doesn’t want anything serious. The reason for this is because a half smile, that is partially smug, means he likes teasing you and enjoys riling you. Open mouth smiles are free, enjoyable and it merely means they are happy and having a good time with you. Way to go!

His Face. Take a long look at his gorgeous face. Does his expression change a lot while you’re talking? If the answer is yes, then he’s interested in not only what you’re saying, but you as well. If his eyes are directed towards you indefinitely, then there might be some confusion. Surprisingly, when guys like a girl they tend to look away. It’s a cue that they aren’t trying to be overtly obvious.

Thumbs Point the Way. When guys are physically attracted to a girl, they’re going to want to show off their assets. If he has his hands in his pockets with his thumbs pointing towards his um…(cough cough)…gentleman parts, he wants you to know that he finds you attractive. That’s because he is trying to draw your eye towards his own special qualities that make him male. However, most guys do this unintentionally. They don’t even think about it. So, try not to judge them too harshly.

Fidgeting. Can he look at you for more than a few seconds without fidgeting? If the answer is no, he’s either having a panic attack or he’s interested. Some guys will play with the buttons on their jackets, straighten their ties, mess with their hair or touch their faces. The point is—if they can’t seem to stay still, then they are nervous. Only the nervous have something to lose, and if that something is a girl’s interest, I’d be nervous too.

So there you have it ladies, guys are not always so hard to figure out. No single one of these little hints means a guy is firmly into a girl or he wants to marry her. Everything differs from person to person. Together though, these hints tell a lady that “said boy” is attracted to her and he’s trying to build up the courage to go a little further, maybe ask for her number or invite her to go on a date with him.

Being young is about making memories, but always think twice. The following advice goes for anyone of any gender or orientation. Don’t be afraid of rejection and don’t be afraid to be open and curious. Life is beautiful, but short, so there really is no time to be afraid of things that will eventually not matter to you in 50 years or so. So ask out whoever you want, whether you can decipher them or not.

These hints are designed to help you in the modern world of dating and “talking,” but please be encouraged to be spontaneous and passionate. WU girls or non WU girls, lovely girls we all make.
