Catherine Lowe: President and Co-Founder of Winthrop’s Her Campus Chapter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Name: Catherine Claire Lowe

Hometown: Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

Major: Mass Communication, Minor in Theatre

Year: 2017

Can you tell us a little bit about the organizations that you are involved in here on campus?

Throughout my 4 years at Winthrop, I have been involved in a numerous amount of student organizations! For one, I am the President and Co-Founder of Her Campus at Winthrop, I have been a writer and editor for The Johnsonian, a member of the Association for Women in Communications, and I have served as the President for the Society of Professional Journalists chapter on campus. I highly encourage every Winthrop student to get involved as much as they can. You never know what doors will open because of it!

What inspired you to begin your own Her Campus Chapter here at Winthrop?

I first heard about Her Campus at College of Charleston. I wanted to learn more about it, so I researched more about Her Campus – what it is, what it provides, how it will affect the future of girls, etc. The more I learned about it, the more I knew that Winthrop needed Her Campus. I wanted to bring an opportunity to the women of Winthrop. We already had publications on campus, but nothing like what HC offers. I mentioned the idea to my good friend Carolyn, and she and I started the chapter on campus together. I’m so thankful we were able to start this chapter and I can’t wait to see everything HC at Winthrop accomplishes in the future.

What do you hope to accomplish in this chapter before you graduate?

I want to make sure that every single girl in my chapter knows that they are capable of achieving whatever goal they put their mind to. Because of my story, I hope I have served as a role model for them and I hope they are able to use my story as motivation for them to achieve their goals. I absolutely love every single girl I’ve met in my chapter and I believe they will be successful in whatever they choose to do in their life. I want them to know that I believe in them and that I will always be there for them no matter what. Empowered women empower women.

How has Her Campus impacted your life?

This may sound cheesy, but Her Campus is honestly the best thing that has ever happened to me. Since starting my chapter, I have made friends from all over the world, I have made amazing connections at huge companies, and I even received an internship with Her Campus Nationals in Boston, which was the most amazing experience of my life. Her Campus has given me leadership opportunities, it’s allowed me to discover my passions, and it has even given me lifelong friendships. During my internship with HC, I also had the chance to interview some amazing people, such as former Bachelorette Andi Dorfman, which was so amazing to do as an intern! I tried to keep my cool since I’m a huge Bachelor/Bachelorette fanatic (laughs).

Do you have any advice for incoming freshmen?

If there’s one thing that I have learned over the past 4 years is to just calm down and enjoy the moment you’re in. Personally, I’ve struggled with this since and have worried a lot about my future, but I wish I could tell my freshmen self to calm the heck down. As a freshman in college, you’re entering the best and worst years of your life, there’s no question about it. Learn from your failures and use your victories as motivation. This is the time to figure out who you are and what you love. Enjoy every single moment. Everything will be okay.

If you could have any celebrity write for your chapter, who would you choose?

Blake Lively, Candace Bushnell, and Lauren Conrad.

What is your dream job?

I have a couple. Editor-in-Chief at Cosmopolitan.com and a red carpet host for E! Network where I would cover red carpet events. Basically I want to be Amy Odell and Giuliana Rancic, but we’ll see what happens!

I’ve heard you’re a huge Starbucks fanatic, if you had to drink only of their drinks from now until you graduate, what would you choose?

Definitely the Pink Drink!! It’s probably my favorite drink that Starbs has ever created, even though it’s technically on the secret menu (shhh!)

Any last words for your fellow Collegiette peers?

You can do anything you set your mind to. I am a firm believer of that. Before I started the Winthrop chapter, I didn’t consider myself a leader at all. I was always the shy one. I really didn’t think I was capable of doing anything related to leadership, much less start a huge and successful student organization. Never not do something because you’re afraid or because you don’t think you’re good at it. If you have a passion about something, work hard to achieve your goals. My mother has always taught me that you can do anything you set your mind to. I believe that if you work hard and work with passion, you will be successful no matter what.

Thank you for all that you’ve done for our chapter Catherine! Words cannot describe how much we are going to miss you!
