10 Signs You’re a Northerner Living in the South

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

As much as we absolutely love being at school in the South, there are a few things that really separate us from our teachers, classmates and friends–and it’s not just the states in between! If you’re a Northerner and have made the move down South, check out these 10 signs that give you and your hometown away!

1. You don’t say y’all.

This is probably the first thing Southerners notice when we talk. We don’t say “y’all” because we say “you guys” instead!

2. You go to grab a pair of ‘sneakers’ for your run.

You say potato, I say potato; you say tennis shoes, I say sneakers! We call them sneakers because our tennis shoes are the shoes we wear to play tennis!

3. You call a shopping cart a carriage.

I can honestly say I have never heard the word ‘buggie’ except for when describing an insect until I moved down south!

4. It’s wicked hot down here!

Us northerners aren’t used to the 90+ degree weather and we will let you know how uncomfortable we are when it is 90 degrees. And yes, we do say ‘wicked’ every other word. We say “wicked” as often as you drink sweet tea!

5. “It’s car not cah” they tell me.

What do you mean people in South Carolina pronounce their ‘a’s? Don’t you wanna get Dunks and go to the pahk?

6. When someone calls you “ma’am,” you get offended.

Because up North, “ma’am” is how you refer to an old lady. I’m not old yet!

7. Chicken and waffles will always seem like a foreign concept to you.

One is a breakfast food and one is a dinnertime food–which meal is it!?

8. You always hope you will see some snow!

…but then you remember, snow doesn’t exist down south–but snow days sure do!

9. You’re ruder than most, and you love that about yourself.

It’s that northern sass…and it’s great.

10. But overall, you put everything aside because now living life in the south is home.

Sweet tea, Lilly P and Chick-fil-a? I can definitely get on board!

Welcome home, northern Collegiettes!
