Thanksgiving break is less than two weeks away, and we all know what that means. For me, it will be saying goodbye to the friends I have spent the past three months with, for a whole week. While I am extremely excited to see my crazy cousins, eat an insane amount of buttered mashed potatoes, and sleep in my cozy bed, it will be the longest amount of time I’ve spent away from my new friends since I’ve met them. Thanksgiving is supposed to be about being grateful and spending so much time with your family you can’t wait to go back to school, but what would it actually be without your besties? Friendsgiving is the BFF equivalent to turkey dinner at your grandparents’ house, watching football and nursing the food baby you’ve acquired after hours of stuffing your face. Friendsgiving is the much more classy, but still a bit trashy version of Thanksgiving with loads of gossip, wine, and stolen leftovers from your family’s dinner the night before.
Putting on the perfect Friendsgiving is quite uncomplicated and highly enjoyable.
First things first: the food. As the host, you must provide the table settings, but friends shouldn’t be too picky, so I believe turkey shaped paper plates and plastic forks will suffice. Friendsgiving should be an enormous smorgasbord. If you’re like me, and not an avid cook, steal Aunt Carol’s leftover stuffing from dinner the night before, reheat it, and bring it to the party. Each friend should be responsible for a different dish, leftovers or homemade, and everyone should bring a different dessert. Who could ever have enough pumpkin pie, right?
Another essential for the perfect night with your friends is wine! What would turkey be without wine? What would green beans and stuffing be without it? What would pumpkin pie and old stories be without it? Acquire some white and some red wine, and bring it out for dinner. Don’t forget an assortment of fun wine glasses.
Yes, this is supposed to be a day of thankfulness, but who could pass up a little friendly competition? Bring out the games after the meal, sit around a fire, and prepare to laugh your butts off. I am a huge fan of Cards Against Humanity, but other entertaining suggestions include Battle of the Sexes, Ladies Night, and Never Have I Ever (the card game).
Let’s not forget the main purpose of this evening: to spend time with your beloved friends, telling one another how much you love and adore them. Be thankful that you have such wonderful people in your life, with whom you couldn’t imagine life without. Make sure you tell them that, repeatedly, whilst shoving your face with pumpkin pie. And, of course, have an incredible Friendsgiving!
