Fall TV Show Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

ScandalI honestly can’t watch the news or political event coverage without thinking, is our real President Obama or President Fitz? What’s Olivia Pope doing about this? Or at the very least, I am convinced that the government is run by completely biased, selfish, and scheming individuals. But hey, Pope’s character is based on the very real crisis-expert Judy Smith, so who knows how accurate the rest of this stuff is? Shonda Rhimes writes a plot that goes deep into the fast-paced, backstabbing, political espionage of Washington, D.C., whether it’s real or fiction. Either way, Thursday nights on ABC is the place to be, so break out the long-stem wine glasses and popcorn and consider it handled.

If nothing else, watch this one for Olivia’s killer coats.

How To Get Away With MurderShonda Rhimes is at it again. (Where are my Grey’s fans at?) I can only wonder, how can one person have so many strokes of genius? With the constant twists, clever characters and drama at every turn, this show is sure to suck you in right away. Right after Scandal on Thursday nights, this show is your perfect combination of crime, suspense and drama. It depicts a group of crafty law students following the lead of their professor Annalise (Viola Davis) into too-close-for-comfort murder trial investigation, and consistent whodunit questions that seem as if they will never be answered. Paris from Gilmore Girls even makes a regular appearance as Annalise’s assistant, as if you needed more reasons to watch.

Hey there’s Paris!!!

Red Band SocietyFans of The Fault in Our Stars, look no further. This show gives the real and sometimes emotional look into teenage angst as a terminally ill patient. Living in a hospital with one another, these kids explore love, despair, and death more than your average group of teens, but their positive outlooks and sarcastic wit keep viewers coming back for more. Based on the real life story of Albert Espinosa, a 10 year cancer survivor, Red Band Society covers topics that some of us are lucky enough to not have to deal with. This inspiring new show even includes Octavia Spencer which many of us remember from The Help, Dinner For Shmucks or even Wizards of Waverly Place. If you’re a sob like me, grab some tissues and get ready for Wednesday nights at 8 on FOX.

*sniffles*

GothamThis Batman pre-quel will explain everything. Every villain and hero is shown from the beginning, focusing on James Gordon’s rise to power. Remember Ryan from The O.C. (Ben McKenzie)? Yep, he’s back as Gotham’s rising commissioner before Batman’s existence. Serial killers, unsolved murders, and otherwise complete turmoil are depicted in this drama of a city in need of a hero in a Batmobile.

Grown-up Ryan in a suit? Sold.

New GirlDo you think you’re the most awkward person, like ever? Meet Jess (Zooey Deschanel), a newly single, clueless hottie living in a house with three guys. She’s offbeat, sarcastic and great at saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, which will make you laugh out loud. This show has been nominated for several Golden Globes and is one of the best pick-me-ups you can get after long day. Not only is this show on Netflix for binge-watching purposes, but there are several drinking games that can go with a viewing party, or viewing solo. Check it out Tuesday nights at 8 pm on FOX.

Neither can we, Jess. Neither can we.

American Horror StoryIf you have to check under the bed every time you watch a scary movie, this one is not for you. Each new season is a different horrific scenario with the same cast, and this season’s is a Freak Show. This Freak Show is not your usual band of outcasts, because every one of them has a bone-chilling secret, and may be standing over your bed tonight watching you sleep. A serial killer clown, a two-headed girl, and bearded lady are just some of the freaks you’ll find at this show. Better keep the lights on tonight.

Sweet dreams.

Game Of ThronesThe one show that guarantees your favorite character will inevitably be killed. But the drama, suspense, love, hate and slight incest makes the show worth it. George R.R. Martin is the genius behind the show, that has made readers and viewers alike, pray that he doesn’t kick the bucket before he’s done. Don’t worry though; he’s signed a contract that he will stick around. So if you’re looking for a show full of surprises (good and bad), dragons, bloodshed, annoying kings and crazy drunkards, this is the show to hunker down with; you won’t want to stop.

And I thought I was dramatic!

Are You The One?Drama, drama, drama. A classic MTV special filled with nights of drinking, awkward romances and a fight to find true love. These young adults go into this MTV reality game show knowing that they have been matched up with someone in the house, but they don’t know who.
