Have you ever thought about studying abroad? I spent the second semester of my third year studying abroad in France and I can honestly say that it’s the best decision I’ve ever made! For all my fellow Laurier students, now is the time to apply to study abroad and I highly recommend you look into applying, even if you’re not certain if you’re going to go. When I first applied, I didn’t think I was actually going to go but I applied just in case and I’m so glad I did. So, if you’ve ever even considered it for a second… do it! Here’s a few reasons why you should study abroad in case you need an extra push.

Great learning experience

Laurier has a lot of university partners in countries all over the world. No matter what your major is, I’m sure there is somewhere that will greatly add to your degree. I’m a French major with a history minor so France was the obvious choice for where I should go to study abroad. No matter what your major is, there will definitely be a great match somewhere in the world that will enhance your learning experience!

Friends from around the world

One of the many great things about studying abroad is all the new people that you’ll meet! During my time abroad I met so many people from all around the world and I have made some lifelong friendships because of it! I even went to Portugal with my new friends from Germany, Finland, Italy and England, which is something I never thought would happen. I now have connections in Australia, South Korea, all over Europe, America, Mexico, Ghana, the list goes on! Not only do you get to make friends from around the world, but you also get to learn more about where they come from and their culture. I’ll never forget the afternoon I spent having tea with friends from all over the globe talking about some of the differences our countries have that I had honestly never thought about before. I am so grateful for all the friends I made during my study abroad experience and I’m also grateful for the fact that it gives me a good reason to travel to visit them!

Core memories will be made

Studying abroad isn’t just about studying (although it is still important), but it’s also about exploring, experiencing life and making so many new memories. I’ve come back with so many stories about all my adventures and I made so many core memories while studying abroad. One of my favourite memories I made was from dancing in the streets of Florence with strangers and watching the sunset, that truly isn’t an experience I’ve had in Waterloo!

Personal growth

Living in a foreign country where you may not know anyone pushes you out of your comfort zone. Suddenly you’re tackling challenges you never imagined you’d face. You’ll really surprise yourself with your newfound confidence and independence that you’ll gain from studying abroad.

Leaving your comfort zone behind and navigating a new country on your own can be really daunting, but it’s also so incredibly empowering. Studying abroad isn’t just an education, it’s a life experience that will shape your future, broaden your horizons and give you memories that you’ll remember for a lifetime. I’m forever grateful that I took the chance and went outside of my comfort zone to study abroad. So, if you’re even slightly considering studying abroad, this is your sign to do it!
