Colours have a direct link to our moods. Yes, everyone has a favourite colour that they want to cover themselves in, but the colours that are in your room or that you wear actually do matter. Here is what a few of them mean and why they matter. Most of these ideas come from a psychological study of colours, read on to find out what your favourite colour means for your mood!

Red

Psychologically, red has the connotation of danger or warning. Red is mostly associated with stop signs, blood, roses or love, depending on who you are talking to. However, if you surround yourself with mostly red you can feel more energetic, but you can also feel higher levels of anxiety. This colour also lets you stand out since red is a bright colour.

Green

Green is usually associated with healthy growth within nature such as trees, grass, or stems of flowers. Green brings a sense of calm to most people, though it depends on the shade of green. If it’s a very bright lime green, it may affect some people differently than others. However, if you have a more muted sage green you could feel more in tune with nature and in turn, more relaxed.

Blue

Many things that surround us are blue. The sky and the ocean are two very big pieces of our lives that are blue. That is why most of the time blue is related to calmness or relaxation, as it can remind some people of the stillness of the sky or the sound of the ocean waves. However, it is important to know that if you have a more muted blue in your room, it can make you feel closed off and cold to friends and family.

Purple

Since purple is not one of the primary colours and is a mixture of a calm colour and an energetic colour, depending on the shade of purple, it can heighten your mood and make you feel more creative. Purple is most commonly associated with royalty, lavender or different kinds of fruits and flowers, which can also have calming and relaxing effects on your mood as well.

Yellow

Yellow is a very bright colour, the colour of the sun, lemons, bananas, bees and more. However, yellow is highly associated with anxiety and irritation as colour psychology suggests though that is not the case for everyone. Some people that say yellow is their favourite colour suggests that it provides them happiness and peace.

Now all of this isn’t to say, “Wear only one colour and you’ll feel magically better”, it’s just to help you feel more aware of what colours you have around you and how they can potentially affect your mood. If you want to wear all black all day, every day and even paint your whole room black, I’m not the one to judge, just noticing the colours I gravitate towards daily helps me figure out how I am feeling sometimes and I hope it helps a little for you too.
