What Does Being a Part of Her Campus Mean to You?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Her Campus has enhanced the lives of many individuals, including my own. It gives each person a unique forum to express his or herself, and step out of their comfort zones while making new friends. Everyone’s time in Her Campus is different, which shows how unique and diverse the club really is. Here are seven interviews of Wilfrid Laurier Her Campus members that I conducted to share what being in Her Campus means to them (and me!) Hope you all enjoy!

During my time with HC, I have learned that people approach and see the world in many different ways and that you don’t have to be similar to someone to form a strong friendship. We get tons of different article ideas and really learn a lot from each other as a group, which I really love.

What year are you in?

How many semesters have you been a part of HC?

I’ve been involved with HC since September 2016, so 4 semesters so far!

What is your position in HC?

Campus Correspondent

Why did you join HC?

I originally joined Her Campus to get myself more involved in the Laurier community and become a member of a group that not only produced great articles but also looked like a lot of fun. It was really a step outside of my comfort zone to originally send in an application, but I’m incredibly thankful that I did.

What have you learned during your time in HC?

As cheesy as this may sound, HC has taught me so much in the time that I’ve been involved with it. I’ve learned to trust myself a lot more, especially in my leadership and writing abilities. I’ve taken risks that I never thought I would take, pushed myself to do better, and above all, allow myself to feel confident.

How has HC influenced you in a positive way?

HC has helped me grow tremendously as a person. As someone who is very naturally shy and reserved around large groups of people, getting involved with HC was initially a very nerve-wracking challenge. But I’m indescribably grateful that I’ve been given the opportunities that I’ve had with HC since they’ve certainly made me feel more comfortable and confident doing what I love to do most every week.

What will you miss about HC (when you graduate)?

When the time eventually comes for me to step away from HC, I’m going to miss the beautiful, talented people that dedicate themselves to our team every week and the ability to showcase all of the hard work we put into every aspect of this club. These strong, amazing individuals are what keep HC so inclusive and wonderful.

What words do you have for future HC members or anyone interested in joining?

Make sure you push yourself and remember to have fun while you do it. You will be surrounded by the most welcoming, kind-hearted individuals who want to see you succeed, so don’t second-guess yourself. If you dedicate your time into it, HC will be completely worth it.

What is your name?

Jenna Steadman

What year are you in?

4th Psychology Research Specialist

How many semesters have you been a part of HC?

This is my 6th semester!

What is your position in HC?

Campus Correspondent

Why did you join HC?

I’m decent at editing and I wanted to get involved with something when I started second year. After a few weeks of editing, I was inspired to start writing and I really enjoyed it, so then I was a part-time writer and full-time editor. After that, I started the Pinterest account, which is my baby. I was then asked to step up as a President/Campus Correspondent in 3rd year and I’ve been in that role ever since!

What have you learned during your time in HC?

Honestly, what haven’t I learned? Her Campus pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and go with my gut. The most random things inspire me to write articles, and I’m almost always impressed with how it comes together in the end. I’ve also learned some invaluable leadership skills through my time at HC. Our team means so much to me, it’s great to connect with students from all over Laurier!

How has HC influenced you in a positive way?

This team has meant so much to me in the past few years. I went abroad in 3rd year and I stayed awake to Skype into the meeting at 3AM!!! I was just sooo excited to meet everyone! It’s really helped me feel connected to Laurier and help support other students who are trying to figure out their passions. I definitely push our team quite a bit, but it’s because I know what they’re capable of. Hard-work breeds success.

What will you miss about HC (when you graduate)?

My amazing exec, our fantastic team and having such a positive, open and supportive team to back me up.

What words do you have for future HC members or anyone interested in joining?

First of all, put 110% into your application. Her Campus is a passionate, hard-working and committed group, so make sure that shows in your application. My next piece of advice is to get to know people older and younger than you. In first year especially, it’s so easy to have friends in your year, but having friends in different years and programs is amazing, and they can certainly help you as you move through university.  The last thing is to be yourself and to be genuine. Not only is it way too much work to try and be someone else, but you’ll miss out on so many opportunities.

HC has given me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone and write about things I wouldn’t normally. It has allowed me to improve my writing, and allowed me to meet a bunch of new people!
