The Ultimate List of Friends Relationships: Ranked

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Netflix just announced that on New Year’s Day, people in Canada and the US will be able to stream all ten seasons of Friends – commence freak out now. In honour of the reveal, we decided to rank the top ten couples to ever appear on Friends.

10. Rachel and Tag

Tag is super adorable and totally doesn’t get Rachel, which is obvious when he gets her a pogo stick for her birthday. Tag is cute regardless of his downfalls, so he and Rachel land the #10 spot.

9. Ross and Elizabeth

Elizabeth is the epitome of the forbidden fruit for Ross. She’s his student, can you say risqué?. She’s very young, and her father, played by Bruce Willis, doesn’t approve. Their relationship was like a time bomb, but it was very sweet while it lasted.

8. Rachel and Paul

Bruce Willis was a great guest star as Paul; he even won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Paul is the college student Ross is seeing’s dad, who ends up going out with Rachel. Their relationship only lasts three episodes, but it was pretty great until he had a crazy meltdown.

7. Chandler and Janice

Janice is just too great to not have her on this list! She and Chandler obviously don’t work out, but it would have been pretty entertaining if they did. Chandler and Janice were far from the perfect couple; Chandler did board a plane to Yemen to escape her.

6. Rachel and Paolo

So this relationship is pretty short-lived, but it was pretty hot. Rachel met the Italian stallion in “The One With The Blackout” when she is trying to find the owner of a lost cat. Paolo speaks very little English, and as a result their relationship is nothing but at passionate whirlwind which Ross is extremely jealous of.

5. Monica and Richard

While Monica and Richard didn’t end up working out, they were still a pretty great couple. It was ultimately their age difference that tore them apart; Richard had already experienced all of the things that Monica wanted from life. Lucky for Monica, she found Chandler and lived happily ever after, but no matter what we will always have a soft spot for Monica and Richard.

4. Carol and Susan

Ross’s ex-wife Susan and her new wife Carol take the #4 spot. Despite unsupportive parents and an unplanned pregnancy, these two remain supportive of each other and learn to cope together with anything life throws their way.

3. Ross and Rachel

Before anyone gets mad about Ross and Rachel being in third place, just hear us out. Ross and Rachel are great. They are passionate and it’s awesome that they end up together, BUT they are never in sync. Throughout the majority of the show, one of them is in love with the other while the other is off with another person (i.e Emily, Julie, Charlie, Paolo, Paul, Tag etc.) They also have horrible communication skills; clearly they were not on a break! There was also the unfortunate incident of them accidentally getting married in Las Vegas and then Ross not going to annul the marriage. Despite all these things, Rachel does get off the plane to Paris and they do live happily ever after, landing them the #3 spot on the list.

2.  Phoebe and Mike

Phoebe and Mike are a match made in heaven! Guest star Paul Rudd plays Mike, the adorable man Phoebe marries outside in the snow. This couple had some great moments and really evened each other out. Their proposals were never quite right, but in the end everything worked out for this pair. Mike even tried to change his name to Crap Bag when Phoebe decided to change her name to Princess Consuela Bannahammock.

1. Monica and Chandler

Monica and Chandler are one of the best TV couples of all time. The best relationships stem from friendships, which is clear when watching these two. Although they are opposites, Monica and Chandler connect so well and want the same things in life, which was the problem with some of their previous relationships. It’s their happily ever after that the series ends with.
