Top Ten Packing Tips for Your Reading Week Vacation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

This is exciting: reading week is quickly approaching and you are one of the lucky ones who get to go on vacation! Whether it’s warm, cold, an adventure, or just for relaxation, the struggle of packing will be real. These are my top 10 tips to make sure you bring everything you need, and pack it the best way possible!

1. Roll, don’t fold

By rolling your clothes instead of folding, not only will your clothes be less wrinkly, but you can also bring more!

2. Make a checklist

I am a list junkie so this is always my go-to.  By making a list you are able to think of everything you need to bring. This way you can check items off as you go so you don’t forget anything! You can also make lists as you go for the things you need to pick up so you are extra prepared!

3. Get a good suitcase

There is nothing worse than having to juggle a billion bags and wheel a sh**ty suitcase around. Invest in a hard-shelled, lightweight, four-wheeled suitcase – you won’t regret it! This way you are less likely to go overweight, your things are less likely to break, and you can roll through the airport with ease.

4. Multi-purpose items

Depending on what kind of trip you are about to go on, the types of bags you need will change. For example, if you are going on a trip to a sunny destination, bring a beach bag as your carry-on. Now you don’t have to worry about lugging an extra bag along with your purse. Lots will fit easily in a beach bag making it a dual-purpose item!

5. Always bring a scale

No, don’t worry, we are not weighing ourselves on vacation! Bring a luggage scale with you, this way you are able to weigh your bags when you are leaving to ensure all the souvenirs won’t cost you the extra weight fees at the airport!

6. You can never bring too much underwear

Yes, I sound like your mother, but what can I say…she was right! You never know what the day will bring, whether it’s changing because you actually did physical activity, switching it up to fit an outfit, or drunk you got too excited… you can NEVER have to many undies with you.

7. Store breakable items between soft items

Whether it’s your favourite watch, or that bottle of tequila you picked up in Mexico, wrapping fragile items in soft items of clothing and storing them between clothes improves their chances of surviving the trip.

8. Zip-Lock your toiletries

Let’s face it, your conditioner is expensive and so are your clothes. By taking this precaution you are able to ensure that, on the odd chance your toiletries open during the flight, they won’t end up all over your clothes. This also means that you are still able to use them because it will be contained in the bag. No mess and no waste, it’s a win-win!

9. Call your credit card people

There is nothing worse than trying to purchase something while you’re away and having your card declined. By calling ahead to your bank, they will be aware that you are not in your city, so when they see a transaction in the destination you are travelling to they wont flag it. Thus, allowing you full access to all your funds!

10. BRING SNACKS

DUH, a girl’s got to eat!!! By hitting up your local Bulk Barn and grabbing some munchies before you leave, you will be saving your stomach, and your bank account. Airport food is hella expensive; by prepping ahead of time you will be able to have snacks to munch on so you don’t have to splurge on sh**ty airport food. Plus, when you get to your hotel you don’t have to be rushed to get to the nearest food vendor; you can much while you wait!

Good luck packing and enjoy your vacation, Collegiettes! Oh, and if you’re going somewhere warm, please bring back the sun!!
