We’re already five weeks into the winter term and likely feel exhaustion creeping in from the long cold months of the season and the amount of schoolwork we have. Reading week is approaching and could be the perfect opportunity to have a quick getaway and, most importantly, a chance for a mental break. We should save ourselves time to relax, recharge and get some more sun to heal our body, mind and soul. Here’s my advice to plan a last-minute trip for reading week.

Be Spontaneous

If you’re planning to follow through with a last-minute mini vacation idea, you’re already quite spontaneous. Imagine booking a flight to a new country to explore in the duration of a week, without a detailed plan of what to do. It may sound stressful for some, but from a different perspective, it’s utterly refreshing to have the freedom to relax and enjoy the moment. If you’re concerned about studying for midterms, bring your laptop to get some work done!

Flights are at Their Cheapest

February may not seem like a great month for a vacation, but flights are usually at their cheapest this time of year. Take advantage of this by travelling to warmer countries, where the weather is suitable for a vacation right now. Use apps such as Expedia and Hopper to scan for the cheapest flights that are currently available.

Choose Affordable Destinations

The good news is that there are many affordable destinations to travel to where the season is currently much warmer. Popular countries to visit right now include Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica and many more!

Not only do these countries offer affordable accommodation and food, they’re also quite culturally rich and have a variety of fun things to do. Remember to take advantage of the free tourist attractions. There are countless touristic sites that offer free entree and visiting such places can be just as fun as paid attractions.

Spare Time for Relaxation

I suggest choosing a relaxing activity, along with other fun ideas, to have a truly refreshing trip. Activities such as yoga, meditation or simply sunbathing can all be soothing for the mind and body. We could certainly use that extra sun that we can’t find in Ontario during winter months. Bring some books to read while recharging if you find reading is peaceful.

A mini vacation during reading week should be a way to restore your mental energy and whatever that means to you, let yourself have the chance to live that out. Taking small but fulfilling breaks from work can have immense positive affects for your wellbeing, so I suggest considering such opportunities to recharge. Hopefully you found my tips helpful and can plan something soon. Have fun relaxing and planning your next getaway!
