Last-Minute DIY Halloween Costumes That Don’t Suck

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

For me, the end of October is quite a hectic time. With midterms, spooky movie sessions and the general hustle of life, it’s easy to forget you need a Halloween costume for that party you want to go to. But even if you do remember or are full of Halloween spirit, costume stores are really unappealing, or maybe I’m just lazy, but there is no way I’m fighting huge checkout lines and paying fortunes for a fancy costume I’ll end up wearing once. DIY is definitely the way to go, so here are some of my favourite costumes that don’t look like you just rummaged through your closet last minute.

Angela, Pam or Meredith from The Office!

Super easy, super recognizable and super cute. Dressing up as a character from The Office is also an instant conversation starter! For Angela: wear a pencil skirt, a blouse and a headband. If you have a stuffed cat you can bring that too.

For Pam: blouse and skirt, curl your hair and bring some art tools like a paint palette.

For Meredith: A red wig and an empty vodka bottle will do the trick.

An emoji!

I think this has to be one of the easiest costumes out there, if you already have the materials. My favourite is the Salsa Dancer, just grab a red dress and heels and you’re good to go! Another easy one is the “Cut It Out” emoji. Just wear a pink shirt and cross your arms in photos. If you want to be an actual face emoji, like heart eyes or money eyes, you can draw it out on some thicker paper and attach it to a ruler to make a mask.

A Contestant on The Bachelor

This one only works if you own or buy a rose. Wear a cute black dress, hold your rose and add a little paper rectangle somewhere on your dress to mimic the name card they show when the contestants are introduced.

The Matchmaker from Mulan

This one is super simple and will get quite a few laughs. Wear anything purple, put your hair into a bun, wear blue eyeshadow and lots of blush. Don’t forget to add the iconic black ink moustache!

And that’s all! These costumes will let you rock Halloween without killing your wallet or motivation. I think the best thing about these costumes is that they don’t stay costumes. All the parts needed are just normal wardrobe items that can be repurposed again and again.
