Thinking of getting a job while in school? Well, let me tell you about my experiences with that!

There are many reasons why one could get a job while in university. Maybe it’s nice to have cash flow in, or maybe you really need money to help get you through the year – especially if you are not living at home. It might be a challenge to find a job that you can still do while being a full-time student. I have always been a full-time student and have had many different jobs while in university. The balance between school and work has been something I have been able to manage.

The first job I ever got was during my second year of university, and it was with Laurier. It was webcasting, where I just got to go to school games and operate a camera. The best part of working with the school is they are the first to tell you to put school first and totally understand your school schedule. Right now, I work for Laurier’s eSports and my boss is always asking us about our school schedules before making a meeting. Both of these jobs did not have the most hours but were still super fun. Jobs with small hours are good as you still can manage it with school and have an income. Just as a side note, Laurier’s athletic department is hiring for fall positions, which can be found on Navigator!

Another job that I wish I did sooner was a summer internship! Honestly, they are the best. The one I had gave me lots of experience for the industry I want to go into. I was also lucky enough to find one that was paid, which meant serious bank over the summer.  This also gave me the opportunity to come back for other summers, as well as do some freelance work during the rest of the year.

Lastly, I have also had the classic job of just working at a grocery store during school. For me, I found that they were less understanding of my school schedule and wanted me to put work first. Out of all my jobs, this one definitely has the most stress of managing with school. I think I would say this job has to be my most difficult one yet. Even so, it gave me the benefit of more hours. I also got to grow closer with my fellow employees, ‘cause when working in customer service there is a lot to bond over.

As you can see, there are many different jobs and opportunities for university students. At the end of the day, it is all about finding the best fit for you!
