In this stunning sequel to the first Enola Holmes movie, we see Enola trying to make a start with her own detective agency just like her brother, Sherlock. Everything begins when she takes on her first official client. Bessie Is looking for her sister,Sarah, who has gone missing. They both work at the match factory where girls have been dying of typhus. As Enola works on her case, her brother, Sherlock, is working on his case about money laundering. I don’t want to spoil anything but their cases may be more related than we thought…
Enola Holmes 2 puts a fun feminist twist to the original Sherlock Holmes books and the ending leaves everyone wanting more. Starring Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes, Henry Cavill as Sherlock, Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria, and Louis Partridge as Lord Tewksbury, this movie is a perfect mix of mystery, action, and women empowerment.
If you loved the first Enola Holmes movie then you’ll love this one as well. The costumes are stunning and though they’re not completely accurate to the time period they’re still beautiful to look at. Enola’s dress at the ball is stunning, no matter what the other girls think.
One of things I loved most about this movie is how women empowerment centered it is. The whole plot point about the match factory is based on a real event. In 1888, the Matchstick Girls in London took strike against the factories they worked in because of the long, unrelenting hours and unsafe working conditions. I loved how they based the plot on an event that actually took place in feminist history and the way they portrayed it was beautiful. Throughout the entire movie, Enola pushes past the misogynistic standards of her time and kicks ass while doing it.
We also get to see a twist on the iconic archnemesis of Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty. In this movie, Moriarty is a woman who uses her invisibility as a woman to do what she thinks is right. I will say this version of Moriarty has even more rooting for her at some points.
Although the main plot of the movie is action-packed and rife with mystery, there is a subplot of romance. At the end of the first movie, Enola saves the life of Lord Tewsbury, who takes his seat in the House of Lords to pass reform bills that could change London for the better. Throughout this movie we see Enola wrestle with her need to be independent and her very obvious attraction to Lord Tewksbury. Tewksbury, if I do say so myself, seems to be head over heels for one Miss Enola Holmes. Though I guess you’ll just have to watch the movie to find out if they get their happily ever after.
Overall, this movie is outstanding and I loved every single second of it. I’ve already watched it twice before writing this article so you know I had to watch it once more while writing it. I definitely recommend watching if you’re a fan of mystery, action, and a little bit of girl power.
