Study Sesh Survival Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

Sometimes the idea of buckling down and getting a lot of work done can seem really daunting but don’t you worry, I’ve put together a list of a few ways you can get your head in the game and write that paper, complete that assignment, read those chapters, and more!

Make sure you’re comfortable with the area in which you are trying to study

Some people really enjoy studying in libraries as it helps them focus – others not so much, and that’s okay! You can always find a desk, dining room table etc. that you can work at it’s just a matter of where.

Pro tip: Make sure your study space isn’t just comfy but maintains an appropriate noise level. Some people work really well listening to music or Netflix in the background but for me that doesn’t work because I get distracted easily.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water is essential for your brain and body to function properly.

Bring some study snacks

Try to stick to healthier options (e.g. grapes or an apple) but a bowl of popcorn has never hurt anyone. Use what works best for you, snack throughout your study session or use the snacks to reward yourself for milestones. For example, after every ____ pages read you can reward yourself with 2 M&Ms.

Don’t be afraid to take some breaks now and then

Your brain can only handle so much new information at once so don’t be afraid to get up and take a walk around for a few minutes or do some stretches. If you’re leaving your workstation (in public) be sure to take any valuables with you or if you’re studying with a friend, you can ask them to watch your belongings thereby reducing risk of theft (an unfortunate situation that does sometimes arise).

Finally, believe in yourself!

If you don’t think you’re able to do something, you won’t.

Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour.
