Keeping up with US politics can sometimes feel frustrating and exhausting. And getting started may seem overwhelming, whether news channels aren’t for you or reading the paper can add to your very busy day. It can also be hard to relate to the people sharing news and their opinions on day-to-day politics. The Girl and the Gov is looking to change that, offering a podcast to start to learn about the world of politics. Hosts Sammy Kanter and Maddie Medved tackle the top stories of the week on Tuesday, and you can catch them hosting guest interviews on Wednesday. This podcast is perfect if you love engaging in politics, keep up a little bit but want to dive deeper, or if you’ve never been interested in politics at all!

Recently, Sammy and Maddie welcomed Jessica Gail—the Director of Communications for Congressman Eric Swalwell—to talk about the ins and outs of working in the nation’s capital, Washington DC. Gail discussed key takeaways from her beginnings on Capitol Hill and gave advice to those interested in working in DC.

Gail answers questions such as, “What are the pros and cons of working ‘on the Hill’?”, “What will I have to wear?”, “What are the living costs?” and more. Her advice does not only apply to those working in DC, but anyone wanting to get involved working in their state’s capital, or another job in politics after college. This podcast empowers women to go after what they want and feel proud of the steps they’re taking along the way, either by helping them with starting internships or developing their careers.

Gail offers excellent reminders such as “dress for the job you want,” weighing what you’re going to sacrifice in order to live out your dream jobs, and leaving a networking meetup with a question or action item. Sammy and Maddie bring on guests to learn more about the interworking of our government—including the interns running it!

At the top of the pod, Sammy and Maddie summarized current events and bit of fun banter that makes you feel like you’re having a conversation with your best friends. Listening to the pod once or twice a week will keep you engaged in politics and catching up with Sammy and Maddie on the regular. The Girl and the Gov Podcast is available on a wide variety of platforms such as YouTube, Red Circle, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify.
