I Tried Making the Trending Dalgona “Whipped Coffee”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

Oh, self-isolation. For me, one of the things I’m beginning to miss the most is being able to visit a local coffee shop in the morning. I’m not usually an over-the-top, crazy-long order kind of a girl, but every once in awhile, I do enjoy an almond-milk cappuccino or cold brew. But to spice up my usual black coffee of late, I decided I was going to have some fun and challenge myself to the latest internet craze: dalgona coffee, aka “whipped coffee.” You may have seen it in a viral TikTok video, posted on March 14, which has since gotten more than 10 million views.

What exactly is a whipped coffee? It’s an inverted latte basically; instead of putting frothy milk on top of the coffee, the whipped fluffy coffee goes on top of the milk. All you have to do is mix together 2 tablespoons of each ingredient- water, instant coffee, and some sort of sweetener (I used a combination of stevia and honey).

The goal is to whip them up to make a light and airy texture, kind of like whipped cream. Personally, I recommend using an electric mixer, although I was able to get it to the consistency I wanted by hand, it did involve an intense arm workout that took about ten minutes for me. And even then, it didn’t turn out as well as the tutorial I was following.

Once your coffee begins to form stick peaks, you should be done. After that, grab a glass with some ice and your milk of choice. Spoon the coffee on top, take a cool picture, mix it all up, and you’re basically a barista now!

So, what were my thoughts? I will admit, the drink was undeniably tasty, and the few ingredients make it super simple to whip up if you have the time. My favorite part was the consistency, the whipped coffee making it super smooth and creamy, which is not something you always get in your normal cup of joe. However, it was a bit on the sweeter end for my taste, so I would probably lower the amount of stevia I used if I were to make it again.

While I don’t see myself making a whipped coffee every morning, I could see myself treating myself to it once or twice every few weeks if I have time. It was definitely fun to try something new and join in on an internet trend while we are going through this weird time together. I think finding any distraction, whether it be creating non-traditional caffeinated beverages or other food trends I’m sure will appear soon, is a great way to make memories or experiment with new things during our isolation. Remember to stay home, stay safe, and stay entertained!

If you are interested, I do recommend trying it out for yourself, as it could be your new favorite drink if you are also missing your usual morning order!
