10 Steps to Get Over Heartbreak

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

Life sometimes can be cruel to you. Right now, for some of you, it must be the result of the election. For others, it can be the rejection from a job at your dream company, or it may be a sudden breakup with your boyfriend. In any case, it can be hard to pull yourself up afterward. You know, however, that you cannot let drama ruin your life. Here are the 10 steps you can follow to get over heartbreak.

1. Cry as much as you want

Like really. Don’t hold in your emotion. As a matter of fact, sobbing is scientifically believed to be a way to keep yourself healthy. Even if you aren’t dealing with anything sad or frustrating, shedding tears releases stress that you are not aware of.

2. Write about it

Keep a diary. Write down what have happened, how you feel and everything you have in your mind. It can be in a form of journal, poem or even song. Be careful, however, if you share them on the social media; once you post, everyone can see. Literally everyone. Don’t use the Internet just for revenge or to get attention.

3. Talk about it

Share your story. Go find your friends or people who are trustworthy and know you well, such as roommates. Explain to them what has made you heartbroken. I’m sure they would listen to you and cheer you up. Remember there is always someone caring about you.

4. Read books

Get away from the reality for a little bit. It can be a self-help book or novel. Any book would provide a blank space in your mind for a short period of time. At the same time, it can also give you a chance to calm down and think back about the drama from a different perspective. My recommendation is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. This book gives lessons applicable to almost any topic from professional life to relationships.

5. Move your body

Don’t lock yourself in your room. Walking around campus or your neighbor is a good start. Being physically active helps you clear your mind and feel refreshed.

6. Listen to music

Plug earphones in. Find your favorite song and pay attention to the lyrics. It would be better if it is an uplifting song. I personally recommend “Today is Your Day” by Shania Twain. It’s full of wise words from a woman who has lived a lot of life.

7. Dress up pretty

Help yourself feel confident again. Even if you’re just going to a class, dress up in a way you feel pretty and on top of the world. Try wearing high-heels or girly skirts if that makes you feel good, or try a leather jacket if you’re going for a badass vibe. Don’t forget to walk like you are a professional model on a runway!

8. Be kind to others

Don’t let the drama ruin your personality. Even though you’re having a bad day, that does not mean it’s the same for everyone. Be nice to others and show them that you care if they are in the similar situation. You never know, they could turn out to be your new best friends.

9. Learn from it

Now, think back over the drama you’re dealing with. Was it something out of your control? Were there anything you could have done to avoid the situation? There must be some lessons that you can learn from it. Take the opportunity and don’t make the same mistakes, if any.

10. At the end of the day…

It is not the end of the world. You still have yourself, your beautiful mind, strong heart and sweet smile, all of which have got you this far. Trust yourself, believe in your strengths and make your next step for a bright future.

Don’t forget to stay positive!
