Balancing Home Life and Your New Life at College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Starting college can be confusing for many reasons: the new people, new opportunities, and  crazy workload can all be overwhelming. With all that’s on your mind, finding time for your family and old friends can be difficult. And, it’s even more jarring returning to your hometown and then coming back to school. Despite all of the challenges, it is so important to keep in contact with those who are important to you, so here are some tips and tricks to help!

Reach Out (with a simple text)

Because your friends are on a new schedule, just like you, they are probably super busy. Take the initiative and send them a little text! Just a simple “hey” or “how are you?” goes a long way, and it will help you keep ties with home.

Schedule Phone Calls

This is so important! Again, we are all under a lot of pressure and on different schedules, so penciling in time for each other works wonders. The chat sessions don’t even have to be on a regular schedule, where for instance you call every Sunday at a specific time; it can be as simple as sending a text a few days in advance to ask what time works.

As far as family goes, make a point to call your parents, because those simple phone calls mean so much to them and can be beneficial for you too!

Plans, Plans, Plans

There is nothing fun about going back home just to sit on the couch (unless, of course you need some relaxation time ;)). So, make a point to make plans in advance with your friends back home. Maybe it’s a trip somewhere fun, or something as simple as visiting your favorite restaurant back home. Even for those people you haven’t kept in close contact with, reach out and make plans for a coffee or lunch date! A little effort goes a long way, and it’s always nice to see people from your hometown!

Group Facetime

Thank you, technology! Group Facetime is so fun because you can talk to not just one of your besties, but many. Remember to schedule time, though!

The Care Package (for us material girls!!)

There’s nothing more exciting than receiving a fun mystery box in the mail! The care package is an opportunity to give your friends some fun goodies that remind you of them. It is also a chance to write a card. Yes, ladies, a handwritten card! The gesture shows them you care (hence the name) and that you put in time and effort.

The care package can be applied to your family as well! Find some fun swag to rep your school or maybe some treats from your local area, and ship it on home!
