Her Impact: Goods that Do Good

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Hey collegiettes™!  We were so inspired by the beautiful weather that we decided to take this entry outside! And what better way to start off our post-Spring Break week than with an entry about our favorite activity: shopping.  But, it’s important for us to realize that where we spend our dollar REALLY matters and there are some great organizations you can support while also sporting the latest trend….

  1. TOMS.  The name is synonymous with those cute canvas slippers that are probably the most comfortable shoes around.  You may have the shoes and the flag, but do you also have their clothing?  For $28, you can sport this TOMS V Neck tee made by American Apparel.  Or if you love the classic shoes, spice up your wardrobe with this leopard pair for $54.
  2. Nyanya Project.  The NGO started by our very own Wake Professor Mary Martin Niepold sells beautiful bracelets like this to support Kenyan grandmothers and their orphaned grandchildren.  Contact Sam Cernuto for purchasing details.
  3. Light Gives Heat.   This company uses a fair trade policy to help Ugandan women sell their jewelry and totes in the US.  What’s great about this company is that with each purchase, you are given a card with a picture of the artist and a story about their life. Starting from around $20, you can own this perfect beach tote!  Or if you need a colorful accessory, try this Confetti Necklace starting at $17.
  4. Kate Spade: Women for Women.  This fashionable store has teamed up with Women for Women International to sell products benefitting women in over 25 war-torn countries.  The Hand in Hand bangle shown here is engraved in cursive with an inside description of: There’s Strength in Numbers.  While the price is steep at $48, its 14k rose gold will be sure to last a lifetime.
  5. Krochet Kids.  Three college friends, Kohl, Travis, and Stewart traveled to Uganda one summer.  Once there, they taught women in government camps how to crochet to make hats for a living.  KK is now a successful NGO selling hats, laptop covers, and tees supporting these Ugandan women.  Their signature LOVE tee shown here can be purchased for a mere $21.95.  Even better?  Enclosed within the shirt is a letter from the artist which you can respond to.

Look fashionable and give back at the same time – sounds great to us!

She especially loves African history and loves the country of South Africa. She hopes to work as a fundraiser for a nonprofit one day, but will go wherever life takes her!
Kelsey Garvey is a junior English major at Wake Forest University. Her upbringing in Connecticut, otherwise known as country club land, inspired her to write in order to escape and locate something more. Writing has also acted as her outlet to dabble in subjects far beyond her my intellectual capacity: art, culture, design, fashion, photography, and music. Other than reading Vogue and Vanity Fair cover-to-cover, Kelsey enjoys frequenting the blogosphere, speaking franglais in daily conversation, and laughing at her own pathetic jokes. Feel free to email her with any questions or comments.
