Fitness at the Forest: Calling All Previous High School Athletes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

As someone who played on sports’ teams all the way through my senior year of high school, I can sympathize with those of you who are now in college missing your athletics. Exercising now is so much more tedious than meeting up with a team for practice after school each day. So for those of you who crave that atmosphere and those sports, look no further. Wake’s Intramural Sports program is the answer. Not only is it a great way to get an hour of exercise while engaging in a variety of different sports, but some of my best bonding moments between my friends and I have happened during IM games.

Campus Rec does a great job including a wide variety of sports for girls, guys, and co-rec teams. When it comes to fitness, a 40 minute game of soccer or basketball can’t be beat. The best part is that you’re having so much fun that you don’t even realize how fast the time is flying by. Some sports that seem to be a highlight of the year are softball, team tennis, bowling, and of course, flag football. Flag football is my personal favorite, because most girls have never played football on any sort of competitive level, so everyone is on an even playing field. It is also an added plus that the championship games of every flag football division are played on BB&T field (where the Deacs play!) My team was fortunate to make it to the championship game this year, and though we didn’t win, the experience was super memorable.

Intramurals are for all levels, not just people who have prior experience in the sport. They are not only for sororities and fraternities, but for anyone willing to form a team. Check out the Campus Recreation website for more information about when and how to sign up for each sport. They’re a great way to meet people, have a good time, and squeeze in some great exercise, all in 1 super-fun hour per week.
