Dress for Success: What to Wear for Your Summer Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

During the summertime, there are basically only two outfits I ever want to be wearing: a bikini to get a tan or a sundress to show it off. Unfortunately, most of our summer plans aren’t really conducive to being poolside 24/7 – it’s summer job and internship time!

Of course, having a summer job or internship is a great way to make some much needed dough, meet some great new people, and build future career opportunities.  But heading to the office every day can put a serious damper on your summer wardrobe. Have no fear collegiettes: it IS possible to show off some style while still keeping your attire classy and professional for the workplace! Read on, working girls:

J. Crew

You can’t go wrong starting off your outfit with a neutral colored blouse. Consider this the foundation of your outfit, perfect as a base for mixing and matching with other pieces. And don’t fret ladies: just because a white blouse is basic doesn’t mean it has to be boring. As long as the style isn’t casual or revealing, a neutral blouse can be extremely stylish. Try something with tiered layers, an oversized bow, or a blouse that’s short-sleeved or sleeveless – but remember: no spaghetti straps!

Banana Republic

The next summer wardrobe essential for a working collegiette ™ is a cute blazer. Did you see that? I said CUTE blazer, not just blazer – and I promise they can be cute! Blazers are perfect because they add a serious edge to any look, but still work for any office environment, no matter how professional or casual. Go for a tailored, slim-fit jacket, as this shape flatters everyone and can be so chic. Another way to add style: look for something with cute, interesting buttons or a pretty colored or patterned lining – you can roll up the bottom of your sleeves just slightly and show that off!

Now for bottoms. If you opt to wear a skirt – and by all means, go for it, especially if you’re worried about getting too hot at work – the key is to MAKE SURE it hits at least the knee. Now is not the time for your super micro minis, ladies. And as long as you keep it classy with fit and fabric, feel free to add style with a pretty color, pattern, whatever!

Of course, pants are always a safe option, but you can’t really roll into the office in your fave pair of jeans; it’s time to buy a pair of real dress pants. Ugh, I know – they all seem so unflattering. But they don’t have to be! Pay special attention to fit and cut, and look for something other than just plain black to add some fashion to the look. I have a pair of steel blue/gray dress pants that I actually love (and they make my booty look great!).

Gap

Finish off your look with great accessories – and now is the time to really bring out the style. But, of course, keep it professional – this isn’t an 80’s themed frat party; we don’t really need the oversized neon hoops from Claire’s right now. Subtle accessories can still be fashion forward! Studs in an interesting shape or color, cuff-style bracelets, or multiple charm necklaces are all very stylish right now and totally appropriate. As for shoes, depending on your office, either closed toed heels or flats are the way to go – either of which can be super cute in a color or pattern!

Anthropologie

And finally, for hair and makeup – keep it professional and neutral. No crazy up do’s, but don’t look like you just rolled out of bed either. Having your hair down and straight, in a classy ponytail, or pinned back with a  fashionable barrette are all great options.  And don’t overdo it on the makeup, especially not too much eyeliner – Taylor Momsen’s look DOES NOT work at work. Keep the makeup clean and natural, and you’ll look extremely professional – and beautiful – as you always do, collegiettes™!

Good luck to everyone on their summer jobs/internships, and remember: your look for work can still be fashionable! And you can always put your bikinis and sundresses back on come Saturday.
