Dare to Be Different: How to Unlock Your Inner Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Remember playing dress-up as a kid? Were you the one donning the princess tutu and tiara, or were you layering 80’s neon leggings, your mom’s high heels and a feather boa?

I was always fearless when it came to playing dress-up. I had no reservations—I’d pair a long, lacey robe with 60’s-style sheer scarves and old pompoms.

We all want the effortlessly put-together look, but achieving such a difficult feat takes time, energy, effort, thought … need I go on? Style isn’t worth all of the sacrifices that come with putting together an outfit, especially for us collegiettes™ who love that extra 10 minutes of sleep (or study time in dire situations).

Just like trying to juggle homework and a social life, style is about finding the right balance. With just a few tips and tricks, you can uncover your true personal style without sacrificing too much of your precious time.

Invest in Basics

Fill your closet with high-quality tees in a variety of colors, several pairs of well-fitting jeans, a crisp white button-up shirt and a tailored blazer. These closet staples will provide a good style foundation throughout the year.

Splurge on the One-of-a-Kinds

Every collegiette™ needs a good-quality coat, such as a trench or a pea coat. When you’re shopping, search for a piece that stands out – a bright color, a classic pattern (like Burberry’s novacheck) or cool hardware. Boots are also a must-have, but unless you absolutely love them, you’ll get tired of them quickly, so be sure and get a solid pair of riding or cowboy boots. Splurge on a pair that you really love, even if they cost a little extra. It’s worth it.

Take Trends with a Grain of Salt

Fashion magazines can be a great way to find fun new fashion ideas. But don’t always rely on what the latest trends are; trust yourself instead! Flirt with fashion, and take a risk once in a while!

Mix & Match

Try combining textures like patent and suede, velvet and ribbing. Work a sequin and tinsel mini skirt with a chunky sweater. To mix and match is, if nothing else, a break from the expected.  No one is an expert at mixing and matching, but it’s more fun to mix big patterns with dainty stripes or textures, like leather and chiffon.

Along with a stand-out wardrobe comes a confidence boost, so don’t be surprised if your friends start asking you for fashion advice!
