A Collegiette’s Guide to the Finest First Year: Orientation Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Congratulations, Class of 2017! Now that you’ve been accepted, stalked your new roomie on Facebook for hours on end, and have been shopping for the perfect dorm room accessories, it’s finally time for Orientation! This is the only time of the year in Wake Forest history where there is no class, no work, and no stress! Don’t get used to it Class of 2017, it only happens once a year!

Although it is a great time of year, it didn’t gain its popularity for the countless meetings with your student advisor talking about the summer reading that you were supposed to do or the excessive informative meetings of alcohol education that you’ll have to endure… It’s a time for meeting new people and making new friends, and you don’t want to miss a second of it!

These are four Orientation essentials that will make your first year experience even better (as if that were even possible)!

  1. The Wristlet tops the list of Orientation must-haves because it’s the perfect way to keep track of your DeaconOne Card, your room key and your cell phone when you’re constantly on the go! Whether you’re into fun Lilly Pulitzer or Vera Bradley prints [eliminated other phrase], wristlets are an essential key to Orientation survival because, let’s face it, no one wants to be that girl that loses their key on their first night out and can’t get into her dorm room!
  1. Granola Bars are a great option for quick breakfasts when you’re racing out the door. During orientation, you’re going to want to sleep in as late as possible and you’re not going to have time to hit the Pit before your first advising meeting. Granola bars provide some nutrients for your body to start the day off right without taking away from your precious sleep time!

  1. Starbucks Coffee can be a serious life saver! After being at DKEs until 3 a.m. last night, you’re definitely going to need some caffeine to keep you from falling asleep in your 8 a.m. Orientation event! Although the line may be out the door, it will definitely keep you from dozing off!
  1. Nalgene Water Bottles are a great way to stay hydrated! There is nothing worse than getting pounding headaches from dehydration and when you’re constantly on the go. You’ll find that you won’t have much time to stop at water fountains to hydrate. Keep a Nalgene water bottle with you and frequently drink water to avoid dehydration!

Make sure to stock up on these essentials before Orientation to make the most out of your freshman experience! Class of 2017, live it up! It doesn’t get better than this!
