Open-Mic Nights on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Everybody is always looking for new ways to have fun around campus, especially on Friday nights. Well, I have a surprise for you. Open-Mic Night at Deet’s is the perfect getaway from all the college stress. It’s where people come to express themselves through dance, poetry, singing and more. This lovely event is hosted by Expressions, an organization on campus that allows students to be themselves and to express themselves artistically. Open-Mic Nights are always packed with all kinds of people who have various talents. There have been bands, belly dancers, poets, beat boxers and so much more.

Some of you might be thinking, “I get nervous in front of crowds. I don’t think I could perform.” The good thing is that this event is held in the smaller section of Deet’s in a comfortable setting. Also, if you ever change your mind about getting up on stage, you can sign up on the performance sheet. Walk-in talent is always accepted. Whenever somebody gets on stage the audience applauds with such enthusiasm. You would think you were a celebrity or something. The comfy setting with couches, chairs and booths makes it easier to show the audience what you’ve got on the stage. The best part is that there are enormous pieces of construction paper that fill up the entire width of each of the table with a pail of crayons in the middle. Expressions wants their audience to know that if you do not feel comfortable on stage, you can always draw and express yourself in the audience! How cool is that?

“If it weren’t for Friday nights at Deets I would be sitting in my dorm doing nothing but watching Netflix [Laughs],” said Manasi Mehta, a sophomore here at Tech. Another student, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “It’s a great stress-reliever. You never know what you’re going to see up on that stage which makes it fun.”

Open-Mic Nights are held every Friday whenever Virginia Tech classes are in session. There is no admission fee for these fantastic nights. Next Friday, April 22, Expressions, along with Student Programs and CAAPC, will host the Chris Cooke Forrest Baldwin EP Release Party from 8:30p.m.-11:00p.m. Forrest Baldwin is a very popular Indy Pop musician that will be performing at Deet’s. Everyone is encouraged to come! So if you’re looking for something to do on a Friday night, come out and join the party! You won’t regret it.

Here is a preview for Friday night!
