Cool Websites You May Not Have Heard Of

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Aren’t completely addicted to the Internet already?  Well, here are a few websites that are sure to make your life easier, less stressful, or just more fun.

http://www.paperbackswap.com
This site is dedicated to book lovers who post books they no longer want online for other people to have.  If a book you post gets requested by another member, you pay for shipping and send it to that person.  For each book you send, you get a credit with which to order a new book, which will be sent to you through the mail at the expense of the person you request it from.

http://www.rainymood.com/
Many of us love to listen to the rain.  It’s calming and can ease the stress and worries of the day.  Now you don’t have to wait for a rainstorm to get your fix.  This website continuously plays an audio track of the rain.

http://www.surfnetkids.com/easy_origami.htm

If you want something fun and easy to do while taking a break from homework, consider checking out the resources on this site to find origami projects.  Origami lets you forget about your troubles for a while and gives you a sense of accomplishment when you successfully create a figure.

http:// http://www.rottentomatoes.com/
Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most trusted sources for movie reviews.  It also provides news information and celebrity spotlights.  You can see how movies are doing at the box office and check out lists of upcoming films and recent releases.

http://www.theonion.com/

The Onion is an online parody news station that features hilarious videos mocking recent real-life news or completely fabricated pieces.  For example, here is a story headline currently on their front page: “Brain-Dead Teen, Only Capable Of Rolling Eyes And Texting, To Be Euthanized.”

http://store.steampowered.com/

For videogame lovers, Steam sells a wide variety of games that can be downloaded directly to your computer after purchase.  It allows you to see what games your friends are playing and offers free trials of select titles.  Steam also has periodic sweepstakes and amazing limited-time only sales on their merchandise.  You can even send a game as a gift which the receiver can download through Steam.

For the musically inclined, there are several free music sites that allows you to pick the music you want to listen to.  A few of my favorites are:

www.pandora.com
Pandora allows you to create and customize music stations based on your favorite songs
or artists.

http://grooveshark.com/
Grooveshark lets you line up a queue of any songs you like and listen to them.

http://www.spotify.com/us/
Spotify has to be downloaded but allows you to create basic radio stations, playlists, and see what songs your Facebook friends like and recommend.

http://www.goodreads.com/
This site gives you recommendations on books you should read based on your favorite authors and books.  It will find similar titles that you might enjoy.  This is a perfect resource for anyone who finds themselves at a loss for what to pick up next.

http://improveverywhere.com/
Featuring a group of improvisation lovers, this website contains videos of improve antics, which range from amusing to amazing.
