College provides an opportunity for students to learn and better themselves. But sadly, not everybody can afford the high tuition and fees that college and universities set each academic year. If you can attend a quality college or university, never take it for granted or believe that the work you put in doesn’t matter. If you get the choice, choose a college that you know suites you, don’t just choose it because it’s a “party” school.

At the end of the day, what is really shaping your future? Is it those fraternity parties that everybody is going to? Or is it learning and studying topics that will shape the fate of your career?

College isn’t all about grades and getting the highest GPA by any means, but it also isn’t all about wild parties and beer pong. It’s perfectly normal to experience those things, but they have a time and a place and it’s not every week or weekend. Do you have a test you need to be studying for or a project to finish? You probably won’t remember everything that happened at a party, but you won’t forget failing a class and delaying graduating.

College is time consuming; you have classes, homework, tests and extracurricular clubs/organizations. You’re supposed to balance all this all while maintaining relationships, a decent sleep schedule and healthy lifestyle. There is no such thing as true balance in life, but you should always try to keep your priorities straight. Keeping your grades up is the major key in college, without good grades you aren’t able to be a part of organizations, relax when finals are done and graduate when planned.

When it comes to significant others and friends, they need to understand that your education is important. If they get upset because you want to stay home and study, then they aren’t being supportive of you and your future. Obviously you would rather be hanging out with them, but college is a time that shapes your future. It’s okay to stay home or go to the library to study, there’s no shame in that. You’ve spent too much time, and you and or your parents have spent too much money to let it all go.

When you have the time, it is perfectly fine to do what you please whether it be nap, party, binge watch Netflix or hang out with friends. But college has never and will never be easy, it’s easy to distract yourself when you are overwhelmed, but don’t stray to the point where you begin missing assignments and failing tests. You have to push yourself to get to where you want to be when you graduate, life doesn’t just hand you a college degree or a job after graduation.
