What Does Sex on the First Date Really Mean?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

The meaning of sex has changed over the years, and what once was used to populate the Earth now has a new meaning. From shows like “Sex and the City” to books such as “Fifty Shades of Grey,” sex has become a raging icon in today’s generation. But behind all the Hollywood sex scenes and Victoria Secret models, what does sex really mean? Or, better yet, what does it mean to have sex on the first date?

From generation to generation, the definition of sex has changed drastically. In the early 20th century, sex was a way of having more children and additional help around the house. Slowly, sex molded into a symbol of love and passion, until now, I feel like, sex has been turned into something much more casual.

Having casual sex is a personal choice that should be respected. Having any sex for that matter is a personal choice. As long as the person is being safe and has the consent of their partner, have at it! When to have sex is a question everyone must ask when building a relationship with a potential partner. We all know you’re supposed to wait until the third date to have sex, but what does sex on the first date really mean?

Having sex on the first date or waiting until marriage to have sex does not define a person. Having sex on the first date does not make a woman a “hoe” or anything other than herself. The truth is, sex is whatever you want it to be. To some, it’s something they value and cherish, only to be shared with a select few. While for others, sex means little to nothing, and that’s okay. Sex on the first date doesn’t make you a “slut” or “whore” and waiting 3 months doesn’t mean he (or she) is going to wife you.

Sex is something that has many definitions and is something you should define yourself.
