Support VCU Women’s Basketball

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Over the weekend I attended my first sporting event as a college student. My friends and I went to the women’s basketball game. While I was at the game I was struck again by the realization that women in sports do not seem to have the support and respect they deserve. VCU students seem to pride themselves on their celebration of diversity and their promotion of equality. These under-attended basketball games really speak to how far we still have to come. The men’s basketball games have a lottery for student tickets and a huge line waiting outside before the game, but the women’s games have rows of empty seats. I know that there are people every week who don’t “win” the lottery for the free seats to the men’s game, and my question is, why not support your VCU Rams at the women’s game?

In a casual conversation when I mentioned the women’s basketball game an individual responded, “I just assumed they weren’t very good at basketball because you never really hear about the team.” For any of you readers that may hold a similar belief, let me clarify — this year’s team currently has a winning record 19-7. This record is very comparable to the men’s 20-6 record. Since VCU is notorious for its support of the men’s team I feel confident in suggesting that a larger fan base would only improve the performance of the team.

Even though the fans don’t seem to show up, the VCU cheerleaders, dance team and beloved pep band all perform in full force. They have a lot of energy and spirit that would only be enhanced by a larger crowd. These organizations of students support both of our basketball teams, so why don’t more of the students? The great appeals of basketball games seem to be the sense of school spirit and pride, the excitement, and the camaraderie. This can all be a part of the women’s basketball games by increasing the student support and involvement. All the ingredients are there for a great time — we just need you!

From a sporting perspective, it is important to note that the women’s basketball games are exciting too. They are a talented team and the games are exciting. In fact, the game I went to was was a one-point game up to the last second! Fans and players alike held their breath as the last shot of the game was reviewed several times before the Rams were ultimately declared the winner. This excitement is a part of sports regardless of the gender of the players.

All Rams deserve our support, and I definitely think it is a problem that so few VCU students are giving the women’s team the attention they deserve. Basketball games are a great way to have fun with your friends and show your school spirit. We should be celebrating the victories of both our teams. Go Rams!
