Monthly Makeup Subscriptions, Are They Worth It?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

“Do you need makeup to look good?” It’s a question people still seem to ask, unfortunately. The answer is no, but doing things to help you feel confident is important. If that includes makeup, and you’re not already taking advantage of monthly subscriptions, then you’re missing out.

Walking into Sephora or any beauty supply shop is beyond overwhelming for some because there is just so much going on. So many brands, all of which are pricy, and talking to someone who works there is helpful until you feel that awkward pressure to buy something you don’t really want. You could end up walking out of a makeup store with $200 worth of makeup in a tiny little bag to which, unless you’ve done your research, you may not even end up liking. There are so many aspects to a good product, and on top of that, there are many personal preferences each person has when dollin’ up. How does it match up with your skin tone? Does it last all day? Do you prefer a powder foundation or a liquid one? The questions are endless and it can become quite a daunting task.

Walking in the store is half the battle, whether you’re a pro makeup artist or thinking about trying a new style, makeup can get so expensive. However, It’s totally worth it if it’s something you’ve tried before and love. It’s beyond frustrating not knowing if that particular product will suit you as well as it did the girls on a makeup tutorial. What is the solution to this? What if there was a service that sent you samples of products monthly? That way you could try many different types of products and through this, you find which product really suits you. Oh, there is?

There are SO many different types of monthly makeup subscriptions, so here are I few I would personally recommend:

Ipsy $10/Month

This is the one that I’m mostly familiar with. It’s a convienient option for college budgets and you get such a great variety of products. It’s the reason I wear makeup more frequently. I have been an Ipsy subscriber since July of this year. I look forward to receiving it every month. The products are amazing, they have some full-sized and some samples and you receive five products monthly. When you sign up, you’re asked questions about what brands you’d prefer, your skin tone, hair color, etc. You continue on to where they ask what actual products you want to try; eyeliner, hair products, mascara, nail polish, highlighter and there are so many to choose from.

Birchbox $10/Month

One of my friends told me about Birchbox. She’s obsessed and it’s because of the wide variety of products. Makeup, lifestyle accessories, skincare, stationary and fragrances are just some of the many products you can receive monthly. A lot of the products are also not well-known, but that’s certainly not a bad thing.

LookFantastic Beauty Box $19/Monthly (UK)

LookFantastic is an online boutique founded in the UK. With top brands like Rimmel, you absolutely can’t go wrong. This is another beauty box I would totally recommend because you’re now learning about some less well-known European products. It opens you to a whole new world of product.

I must reiterate how amazing it is when you’re experiencing with makeup/new beauty products. You have all of these options to choose from, so if there’s a brand you can’t live without, you can order it right away or run to your nearest mall with way less pressure than before. Products that aren’t your favorite could be your friends favorite, so sharing is fun, too. Waste is non-existent! A makeup subscription plus a few quick YouTube tutorials and you’d be surprised how quickly you can become a makeup pro.
