DIY- How to Trim Your Bangs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Bangs are a very popular hair style this season. They are super cute, but also require maintenance. Unfortunately many of us college girls are can’t afford the time or money to go to the salon for a bang trim. This tutorial is useful because you can learn to maintain your bangs between visits to the hair salon. The best part is that trimming your own bangs is easy and can save precious moola for other fun events!

What you need:

  • Scissors
  • Fine-toothed  Comb
  • Mirror
  • Towel
  • Bathroom

Before Photo- My bangs are super long.

Preparation: Wash and dry your hair. Straighten your bangs. Place a towel around your shoulders or on the floor to gather trimmed hair.

Step 1: Separate your bangs from the rest of your hair. Put the rest of your hair into a clip or ponytail so that you don’t accidentally cut into your longer lengths and have odd pieces that are too short.

Step 2: Comb your bangs with a fine-toothed comb. Place the comb in your bangs where you want the length for your bangs to be when cut (shown below). Now do your first trim. For the first trim you may want to leave a little length on your bangs. This way you will not accidentally cut them too short. Make sure not to cut horizontally hold the scissors vertically and only take little snips of your hair at a time. This is a slow process but cutting vertically ensures that you don’t have chunky, home cut looking bangs. Here is a video that shows how to hold your scisors while cutting.

Step 3: Now divide your bangs into 3 sections. Again place the comb at the desired length of your bangs and trim. Do each section, then trim them all together to make sure that they are the same length. If they are not perfect don’t worry.

Done! You have now trimmed your bangs yourself. During the week if you notice some pieces that did not get trimmed right just trim them off as you notice them.

The key factors to cutting your bangs are:

  1. Don’t be afraid. Wear them confidently.
  2. Go slowly.
  3. Don’t cut them too short.
  4. Cut vertically.
  5. It’s ok if they are not perfect- you can always wait a few weeks till they are longer and try again.
