Confessions of a Juice-a-holic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Ever since the early 2000’s, juicing everything and anything has become the latest fad. Books, Youtube videos and even diets have been centered around juicing and I’ll admit, I’ve been hooked and related completely in.

Right before Christmas a few months ago, my mom asked me what I wanted as a gift. Since I was 18 and all, I didn’t really need much more than a 16-pack of toilet paper and a new mascara, but then I went to a bookstore and started browsing. I stumbled into the health and nutrition aisle (surprise, surprise!) and came across what seemed like hundreds of books on juicing. The names ranged from “Crazy, Sexy Juicing” to “Try This Juice Fad Diet” and even to “Waste 300-some dollars on a Juicer that you will use maybe 3 times!” After skimming through several of these books, I knew the answer to all of my problems was to get a juicer.

My mom and I looked up some juicers and long story short; we ended up getting one for around $300 from the brand Omega. Omega seemed like a good brand and my mom’s friend had one from the same brand, so we knew they were reliable.

Well, now that you know the basis of why and how I got a juicer, here are my confessions from being a juiceaholic:

You will not use your juicer as much as you think you will

Putting together your juicer, preparing what you’re going to juice, juicing and then cleaning up all of that takes a lot longer than I, or anyone else that owns a juicer, thought it would take.

Cleaning a juicer is not easy (or quick)

People are not kidding when they tell you that is not necessarily easy to clean a juicer. Like many foods, fruit and vegetables mold, especially when they are wet. So no, you will not juice your breakfast every morning, because no one has time to clean up something for 20 minutes.

Juicing machines are loud

Pretty much. Just another reason why you won’t be juicing your breakfast every morning, or any morning for that matter. If you live with anyone else, they will be able to hear your juicer. Your neighbors might be able to hear it too.

Juicing might not be the answer to everything you thought it would be… and that’s okay

After juicing a few meals, trying out a juice cleanse and giving up on cleaning your juicer, you will realize that maybe getting a juicer only made more problems than solutions. But that’s okay! Soon after you’ve bought, used and not-used your juicer, you may realize it was a waste of money – or – you may realize it was not a waste of money.
