4 Ways Buffy the Vampire Slayer Would Be Different if It Took Place in 2016

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” first aired in 1997 and continued to bless us with all its demon-slaying glory until 2003. In addition to the constant well-placed puns before a stake to the heart, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was jam-packed with classic late 90’s and early 2000s life. From the hair clips to the landline phones, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” would look very different if it were set in 2016.

1)      Siri would be a member of the Scooby Gang

Why run to the library if you can just ask Siri how to kill a Hellbeast? Research would take much less time with modern technology that spans beyond Internet Explorer. But after about three cracked phone screens, Giles would have to make sure that Buffy has a good phone case to protect her phone during Vampire fights.

2)      Communication would be way easier

Speaking of phones, modern episodes would have less “where’s Buffy?” thanks to smart phones. Willow would totally install the Find Me app to keep track of her friends. And Buffy seems like the kind of girl who would never be separated from her phone. Can you imagine how lit her Snapchat would be? #SlayerSelfie

3)      Different fashion

As fun as fuzzy sweaters, butterfly clips, layered tanks, and jean jumpers are (not), fashionable Buffy would not be caught dead in that style in 2016. She totally would rock the preppy look while Willow would definitely have a hipster vibe. However, Faith’s rocker wardrobe would be exactly the same because you can’t beat chokers, leather, and crop tops. And as much as Spike’s bleached hair had our early 2000’s hearts aflutter, a modern Spike would sport sexy silver hair.

4) Relationship status

“It’s complicated.” Is there an option for “my boyfriend is a Vampire who only sometimes has a soul?” In the 2016 Buffyverse there would be.

What ways do you think “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” would be different in modern times?

Katie, a Senior at VCU, is majoring in International Studies focused in European studies and is minoring in both Spanish and Writing. She credits all success and sanity to dry shampoo, The Arctic Monkeys, and chocolate. Her favorite things include argumentative essays, pitbull puppies (or really any puppy), and spring. Katie hopes to one day get paid to travel the world and write.
