Why We Love Luna Bars

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

So it’s no secret that HC Vanderbilt loves our Luna bars. They’re made for active, hard-working women like ourselves, and they help us to be the best we can be in our classes, meetings, and social lives. Plus, the flavors are delectable!

We received a huge shipment of Luna bar minis in our HC Survial Kit, but I wanted to expand upon that a little by talking about why Luna Bars are so great. I also wanted to share some of my favorite flavors!

I got really into protein bars in middle school, when I realized how much I hated cereal and how few quick and healthy breakfast options I had left. I started out with Clif bars, but eventually found them too heavy in the morning. That was when I discovered LUNA bars, my favorite brand of protein/wellness bars to this day. To me, LUNA bars are light enough to be granola bars but provide enough sustenance to last me all morning. I love all of the flavors I get to choose from, even though they discontinued my favorite flavor, Chocolate Raspberry. But no hard feelings, LUNA- I love your new Carrot Cake flavor! Plus, they’re less than 200 calories, which makes them perfect for a light breakfast or healthy snack. They always get me through my 3PM slump, and when paired with a piece of fruit, LUNA bars help me conquer my morning classes with energy and vitality, especially after a tough workout!

In case you’re new to the LUNA world, here are some of my recommendations for flavors!

Favorite LUNA Bar Overall: Chocolate Peppermint Stick
I cannot get enough of this flavor. I love the chocolate-mint combo, especially in protein bars because it makes me less likely to need gum after! This flavor is basically like Christmas, but you can have it all year round. If I had to recommend just one flavor to people, it would be this one!

Second Favorite LUNA Bar: Chocolate Dipped Coconut
This flavor is fairly new, and as a huge coconut fan, I was super excited to try it. Let’s just say it didn’t let me down, as it has now become a regular snacktime staple for me! It has a nice but not overwhelming coconut flavor, so even if you don’t love coconut as much as I do, you’ll probably still like it. Plus, the packaging is really pretty for this bar in particular- I love turquoise!

Favorite LUNA Bar that Brings Back Memories: Iced Oatmeal Raisin
This was one of LUNA’s first flavors (take a look at its old packaging below!), and it remained one of my favorites all through high school. I got a little burnt out on the flavor, but I still go back every once and a while for a dose of nostalgia. If you’re a huge oatmeal raisin cookie fan like I am, you’ll absolutely love this bar!

Favorite LUNA Fiber Bar: Chocolate Raspberry
The Fiber bar line is pretty new, so not a lot of people know how great they are! They’re lower in calories but higher in fiber, making them perfect for an afternoon snack. I’d compare them to Nutrigrain bars, but more filling and much less artificial! I love the Chocolate Raspberry flavor, because it brings back memories of the old Chocolate Raspberry bar LUNA used to make! I haven’t tried Peanut Butter Strawberry yet, but it’s definitely on my grocery list!

Favorite LUNA Protein Bar: Chocolate Peanut Butter
So I actually just discovered I’m lactose intolerant, which makes me mostly unable to eat the Protein bars. HOWEVER, the Chocolate Peanut Butter bar was my favorite before I started having trouble with dairy, and I can’t recommend it enough. These bars in particular are great right after a workout, because the high amount of protein helps your muscles rebuild and recover. Plus, who doesn’t love peanut butter and chocolate? It’s a winning combo every time. So if you’re okay with lactose, definitely consider trying these bars!

We’re lucky because Vanderbilt carries a huge amount of LUNA bars in almost every flavor listed above. So next time you’re at the Munchie mart, get a LUNA bar instead of a pack of Oreos- you’ll feel rejuvenated in no time!

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
