The New Closet Staple- Silk Shirts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Vanderbilt chapter.

Each year, there seems to be a new “staple” item that the fashion world deems necessary for all of our closets. These clothing items and accessories are often purported to be versatile and can easily be taken from day to night with a touch of darker eyeliner and some lipstick. Although this is often true, some of the items they suggest are often too trendy and not realistically wearable for 75% of the female population. Even though their recommendations can often be daunting, one area in which they hit the mark this year was with the silk shirt.

Owning a beautifully made silk shirt is almost as important as having a great black dress. A silk shirt looks chic with just a pencil skirt but can also look amazing with a simple pair of skinny jeans. Because of its versatility, investing in a good quality shirt is a necessity, and if taken care of properly, it will last you years. Due to their popularity, silk shirts come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and they also start at various different price points. The French brand, Equipment, is known for making shirts with impeccable cuts and sleek designs, but the shirts will set you back about $200. There are obviously cheaper silk shirts that are just as good and will cost you approximately half the price. J. Crew has some great options and so do department stores such as Nordstrom.

Below are some of my favorite silk shirts:

Stacey Oswald, originally from South Florida, came to Vanderbilt as a member of the class of 2015 and got involved with HerCampus her freshman year. She became assistant editor that year and is now the Campus Correspondent for Vanderbilt HC as a sophomore. Stacey is currently a columnist for Ask Miss A- Nashville and the life section of The Hustler. She's also very involved in her sorority, Kappa Delta, as well as Invisible Children. Outside of school and her extracurriculars, Stacey finds happiness in many sources, the most crucial being exercise and the sun. She loves to attend exercise classes and is an avid runner; she recently completed the Country Music Half Marathon. She also loves Vitamin D, especially when on the beach- though of course, she only soaks up the sun after applying SPF. A few of the things Stacey couldn't live without? Good food (especially from Sweet Cece's, Bricktops, and Samurai Sushi), great books (The Hypnotist's Love Story is a recent favorite), her family back in Florida, her wonderful boyfriend, and all of the great friends she's made at Vanderbilt.
