Supporting Friends and Why They’re Important

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

It’s the beginning of a new year, new decade…but what about a new me? Will I truly transform myself this year and for the next ten years? Well I now know that I can’t do it alone.

These past six months I have learned a few things about true friends, self-love and accepting help. First things first, WE ONLY ACCEPT THE LOVE WE THINK WE DESERVE! Meaning that those that you surround yourself with have an external and internal effect on your being. So choose wisely. I didn’t believe this until I realized that I didn’t have true friends and that these people were just “fluff friends” that filled up my time but didn’t bring any true substance to my life. I now have supporting true friends that would die for me and bring me Chick-Fil-A on a rainy night. Secondly, self-love. We repost the quotes on Instagram and preach it to our friends but to have that truly for yourself is a rarity. This goes hand in hand with mental health as well. Writing out your emotions (journaling), going to therapy and having strong coping mecahanisms will go a long way. ALWAYS PUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH FIRST! Have friends that are good listeners and that will help you on this journey…they are the keepers! Last but not least is accepting help. This could mean anything from a car ride to a vent session. Hiding your emotions and acting “fine” all of the time is ingenuine. Put down your guard and ask for help when needed. If they are good friends then they will help in any way that they can.

In conclusion, life truly is what you make it…do fun things with weird people.
