Sense8’s 5 Ways to Diversity

Sense8 is a Netflix original that captivated audiences earlier this year. This Sci-Fi thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire season. Granted, the beginning of the season is a little slow simply because of exposition, but it somehow still draws you into this mysterious world. Although the series is a work of art the real draw is the diversity of the show. Lately, Hollywood has been questioned about its lack of diversity, and Netflix has tried to surpass this issue with shows like Orange is the New Black and now Sense8.

The show has a strong female presence. The women of this show kick some serious butt. A majority of the women are not damsels in distress, in fact they help the guys out of some tight spots quite a few times.  They are smart and forces to be reckoned with!

The show provides us with cultural diversity. Since the plot takes place in several different countries it seems like a no brainer that they would allow us to view  the different issues faced in each respective country.

Characters are not whitewashed. It is so common for casting directors and producers to simply hire white actors and actresses to play the roles of minorities. This show hired actual people of color to represent these different countries and cultures.

The show did not shy away from gay and lesbian couples. The show did not simply focus on heterosexual couples, they gave us a great dose of gay and lesbian couples.

One of the main characters is a transgender woman in a lesbian relationship. To make this situation even better the actress herself is a transgender woman. Again it is so easy for casting directors to simply hire a woman who has never been through the process of actually becoming a woman. The show also does a great job of showing us a few issues that transgender people face with their families after their transition.

So next time you decide to partake in a little Netflix and Chill make sure you check out this amazing series.
