Bentonite Clay: The Healing Secret for Everything

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you’re always trying to find the next best thing for your skin or hair. If you’re also like me, you aren’t trying to spend too much money to get your hands on good products. Lucky, there’s always an alternative.

Bentonite clay, also known as montmorillonite, has been dubbed the “healing clay” for centuries. It has a ton of benefits for your body, mostly in helping as a detox. Its history is very unique. It’s been found that ancient cultures in Central Africa, Andes, and Australia used the clay for multiple purposes such as food poisoning, mineral deficiencies, aches and pains, and infections. Eventually, they used the clay as spa and beauty purposes.

The clay is composed of ash from volcanos. It is also rich in minerals such as calcium, silica, magnesium, iron, potassium and sodium.  It has the ability to produce on “electric charge”. When activated with liquid, it drags all of the toxins, metals, impurities, and any other harmful components we don’t want in our body. Pretty cool, right?

It’s commonly used as a facial. You can either mix it with apple cider vinegar, rosewater, or just regular water. Remember how we talked about how it removes metals? Make sure when you’re making your mask to not use a metal spoon or metal bowl, as it will deactivate its powerful effect. Wooden or plastic spoons and bowls work best when combining your products together into a mix or mask. Apply it on your face, allow it to dry for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse with warm water. You can even add some clay to your bath for a detox all over your body. Here are some topical reasons to use the clay:

  • Blemishes
  • Skin irritation
  • Bug bites
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Burn

The clay is safe for all skin types. While it removes toxins from the skin, it also makes skin softer, reduce sebum, promote even skin tone, exfoliate, and give you a defined glow!

If you want to add some life to your hair, use the clay mask! It will hydrate, moisturize, defrizz, soften, and enhance your curls or natural hair texture! It gives you the detox and clarifying effect your hair needs in order to flourish. It lifts up build-up in your hair from constant use of products. Like the facial mask, you can mix it with apple cider vinegar for a clarifying treatment to your strands.

For a better skin routine and healthy hair regimen, make sure you go out and get your jar of bentonite clay. Apply your treatment once or twice a week for best results. You can order online on Amazon or try visiting your local vitamin and mineral store.  Two pounds of the bentonite clay normal run anywhere from $10-$15. Hope your skin, hair, and health journey prospers!
