5 Movies That Will Get You Through a Breakup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

So you’re newly single. Is that a bad thing? Whatever it is, don’t waste your time sobbing or self-loathing. The world hasn’t ended, although you feel as if it’s sitting on top of your shoulders and I’m sure you have supportive friends to help you through this. The first few days may be tough, but I’ve prepared a list of movies that will help you get over your ex through the best outlet… LAUGHING.

1. John Tucker Must Die

John Tucker is the star basketball player and all-around ladies’ man. He dated the head cheerleader Heather, the honor roll student Carrie, and the flirty girl (that somewhat gets around) Beth, all at the same time. The girls find out and take Tucker down by setting him up to fall in love with Kate, a nerd they coach to become a knockout diva that sends him head over heels. The plan backfires in more than one way and still leaves John to get praise from the rest of the guys in school. Kate falls for someone else in the end. Maybe you shouldn’t “get even”. A must-see movie for a time like this!

2. Legally Blonde

Elle Woods was the American dream girl with long, flowing blonde hair and the perfect life. She was in a relationship with Warner, the hottest guy in the best frat in town. She was president of her sorority and dreamed of only becoming Warner’s wife. He broke the devastating news to her that she did NOT fit into his “perfect” life he planned on having because she was too “blonde”. Elle proves him wrong by getting into Harvard Law and actually making it through law school. She realizes she’s too good for Warner and finds love with someone else. You go, Elle!

3. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Peter is appalled and devastated when his girlfriend Sarah, who happens to be a beautiful actress (in a dream world, right?!), breaks up with him after five years. He loses all motivation to move on with his life, so his brother suggests he take a trip to Hawaii. All hell breaks loose when Peter realizes he is actually staying in the same hotel as his ex, Sarah, and her new boy toy. This movie is great to watch after a breakup since it’s actually about a breakup and can touch home to some things that may have happened in your own relationship. It’s always helpful when you can laugh through things that you relate to in movies.

4. The Wedding Singer

Who doesn’t love Adam Sandler movies? I personally can watch Adam all day and never be disappointed because I laugh hysterically. In this ’80s flick, Adam Sandler plays Robbie Hart, a local wedding singer who hits an all-time low when his fiancé dumps him at the altar. He meets Julia, who is engaged to an unfaithful jerk, and he falls in love with her. He then tries to figure out how he can make her realize she’s with a loser. This is considered a number one film that will make it hard for you to frown!

5. The Break-Up

This comedy with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston will have you in tears of laughter after the first fifteen minutes! Brooke (Aniston) who feels less than appreciated by her childish boyfriend Gary (Vaughn) breaks up with him in hopes that he will miss her and beg for her to come back. They listen to everyone’s opinions except each other’s which causes them to start a war between one another. The bad part is, no one wins. Yeah, it has a couple of scenes that will have you thinking about your ex, but you’ll leave with more memories of laughter than heartbreak. Trust me, you won’t go wrong with this movie!

Breakups suck, but they don’t mark the apocalypse. Although you may experience heartache and reminisce on all of the great times you all had together, you will be fine. When feeling down, look up the movies listed above and pop some popcorn. These breakups can be sort of funny, right? Good luck!
